This 1-hour presentation provides the anesthetist with a review of the importance of adequate ventilation for the anesthetized patient. Following a brief review of respiratory anatomy and mechanics of spontaneous and assisted ventilation, we will identify the benefits of applying intermittent positive pressure ventilation with a mechanical ventilator. Manipulation of ventilator settings and ventilatory strategies for patients with specific respiratory compromise will be reviewed in a case-based approach.
