Join a Movement to Build Equitable and Kind Communities for People and Pets

Companions and Animals for Reform and Equity (CARE) invites animal welfare volunteers, staff, and everyone committed to racial equity, diversity and inclusion to join the CARE Givers Circle. Members will receive a monthly newsletter, invites to national calls, the latest CARE content, and the ability to connect with other advocates locally and nationally.

The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement’s DEI survey analysis report, released earlier this year, again affirms the need for a concerted, collective effort to strengthen DEI efforts in the field, and the CARE Givers Circle prioritizes action in its commitment to welcoming diverse voices and perspectives into the industry and supporting BIPOC communities.

“Where there are people there is power. To fully realize this power, we must be inclusive of all people,” Chief Engagement Officer Kenny Lamberti says in a CARE press release. “For far too long too many people and particularly BIPOC individuals have been systematically left out of the power structure. The human animal well-being movement has historically been one of the least inclusive and diverse fields, and the CARE Givers Circle aims to change this by intentionally prioritizing equity and inclusion in all aspects of our work.”

In 2022, CARE will continue raising money for the Dr. Jodie G. Blackwell Scholarship, an endowment introduced this year to help fund scholarships for African American veterinary students.

Online Course – Starts 2/7/22 – The Full Picture: An in-depth workshop featuring academic and skill exploration of classic and new research in instrumental learning – PPG (fee applies)

As trainers and behavior consultants, our primary goal is to increase and/or decrease behavior. This involves instrumental conditioning. Having a strong understanding in the science of instrumental learning will greatly improve your ability to change behavior effectively and humanely. This course covers the basics of instrumental learning, the side effects and alternatives to punishment, the latest research on training methods and their impact on behavior and the biology of learning.

    Instructed by Dr. Kristina Spaulding

CEUs: PPAB 6, IAABC (pending), KPA (pending), CCPDT (pending)

    Who Is This Workshop For?

This course is for anybody interested in the training of dogs. Beginners, or those wanting an in-depth review of instrumental learning, would benefit from taking the entire course. If you already have a strong understanding of the four quadrants and the side effects of punishment, sessions 3 and 4 still have something to offer! Session 3 covers the latest research on training methods, including the effectiveness of clicker training and “effort-based training”. Session 4 discusses evolution, genetics and physiology in relation to learning and behavior.

    Remote Support via Facebook Group

Attendees who purchased the package will be invited into the Facebook group 7 days prior to the start of the workshop.

Working Spots (Strictly Limited to 15 spots ONLY!) – After each webinar Dr. Kristina Spaulding will post information regarding the key skills you will need to practice and master. Those attendees who are registered for a working spot will have the opportunity to post videos of their training sessions and receive mentoring support and feedback directly from Kristina in the Facebook Group. Each of the Recorded webinars and recorded Q&A sessions will be posted in the group a few hours after the live event.

Auditors (package only) – We will have a Facebook group set up for all attendees where information regarding the webinars and necessary links will be posted. Attendees can network here with other attendees and benefit from discussions and deliberations regarding the information. Recorded webinars and recorded Q&A sessions will be posted in the group a few hours after the live event.

Individual Session Attendees – Those who register for just one or more individual session will receive a copy of the webinar recording within 48 hours of the session.

Webinar – 1/13/22 – Connection: How to Build Loose Leash Walking in Sport and Real Life with Shade Whitesel – FDSA (fee applies)

Wouldn’t it be awesome to let your dog out of the crate at the sports venue, have them orientate directly to you with nary a glance around at the busy surroundings and walk perfectly with you to the ring entrance? Wouldn’t it be awesome to snap the leash onto your dog, exit the front door and go for a nice neighborhood walk, saying hi to the neighbors, passing dogs, cats and bicycles, stopping for your dog to sniff every once in a while? Instead, your arm and shoulder hurts from the constant pulling, the constant yanking, you keep a death grip on the leash 6 inches from the dog’s collar on the way to the ring, you are embarrassed to exit the driveway, let alone go for a walk around the neighborhood, and you are looking sideways at the prong collars in the pet store aisle every time you go in to buy dog food. Want some strategies? Want some joint relief? Want the dog to act like they are following you, rather than you following them? I’m not a total miracle worker, but join me for this webinar and I’ll give you some skills to work on that will make walking much more enjoyable, whether that is from Pt A to B in the competition venue or outside in the real world.
