In this presentation, we will take the foundations from part one and explore ways of applying them to help move our organizations forward in the best way possible for our people and their pets.

- Sept 21: Part 2 -Data-Driven Decision Making for Animal Welfare Organizations (this webinar)
Presenters:

Dr. Josh Fisher has an educational background in population management/medicine, public health, veterinary sciences, informatics, and healthcare administration. He has been working in the veterinary medical/animal welfare field for over 15 years holding management roles in private practices, cooperate practices, the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine, county government, and now as the Animal Services Director for the City of Charlotte/Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.
A strong advocate for professional development and growth in the animal welfare industry, Josh seeks to involve staff in continued education and training opportunities as well as in cutting edge industry research. His professional interests focus on disease reduction/prevention, advanced marketing/placement and intake reduction tactics, strategic planning, and staff career development in the area of animal welfare. His projects include increasing interest of veterinary/veterinary technician students in the animal welfare industry as well as working with community veterinarians to break down barriers, develop relationships, and increase involvement in community-focused animal welfare (animal control and sheltering) practices.
It is a passion of Josh’s to bring a level of awareness to the animal welfare industry in such a way that young adults and college students make the decision to pursue animal welfare as a profession rather than falling into it by chance.

Webinar – 9/15/21 – Building and Maintaining a Productive High Volume Foster Program That Serves the Animals YOU Need Help With – NACA/Justice Clearinghouse
Foster programs are a necessity in any animal shelter or rescue but creating and maintaining one that provides consistent positive output can be a challenge. Foster homes reduce in-shelter population, reduce stress on staff and animals, and provide much needed real-life information about adoptable animals. The challenge is creating a foster base that will consistently help with the animals your shelter needs help with; the medically challenged and/or behaviorally challenged population. What you will learn:
- How to break down your foster program and rebuild it for success
- The benefits of opening your foster program up to include all adoptable animals in your shelter and why that variety will help you sustain your program
- How to streamline communication with foster parents
Other Webinars in this Series Include:
- Dec 10: Recruiting the Next Generation to Your Agency
- April 8: Staycations and Daycations – Building Short Term Foster Programs
- July 8: Building and Maintaining a Productive, High Volume Fostering Program
- July 22: The Care, Nurturing and Enrichment of Tame & Feral Volunteers

The National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership.

Online Seminar – 8/25/21 and 8/31/21 – Diversity & Inclusion in the Veterinary Profession: Why It Matters – CVMA
The veterinary profession is one of the least diverse professions in the United States with regard to underrepresented and historically marginalized populations. This webinar will highlight historic and current trends in the veterinary profession. Participants will appreciate why creating more diverse and inclusive veterinary teams is critical to the profession’s endurance and to the people and patients it serves. Participants will gain an understanding of the meaning of popular terminology related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Dr. Suzie Kovacs will demonstrate how individuals can reflect on their own biases and come to understand that uncomfortable conversations may be a necessary component of progress. Through sharing some of her personal experiences, Dr. Kovacs hopes to be of benefit to others who are on a similar journey. This webinar will be of interest to those who are new to DEI discussions, as well as anyone committed to working with others to create a healthier and more robust veterinary profession.
Attendees can earn 1.5 CEUs. Sponsored by Hill’s Pet Nutrition.
This seminar is open to veterinarians, veterinary technicians, veterinary hospital staff, and veterinary students only.

Online Event – 8/24/21 – Maddie’s Candid Conversation with Dr. Lila Miller – Maddie’s Fund
This Maddie’s Candid Conversation is an open, informal 60-minute conversation and Q+A with Dr. Lila Miller, DVM, a groundbreaking and trailblazing visionary!
In 1977, Dr. Lila Miller was one of the first two African American women to ever graduate from Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. In a career spanning 42 years, Dr. Miller transformed the lives of countless pets, developing the first veterinarian-written guidelines for shelter animal care, which are now used in shelters across the country to ensure the humane treatment of shelter pets. Throughout, she’s educated a generation of students about issues shelters face and has paved the way for women of color in veterinary medicine.
As the recipient of the 2021 Avanzino Leadership Award for her bold ideas and innovative work in the field of veterinary shelter medicine, it is no wonder she is the mother of shelter medicine. A proclamation of Dr. Lila Miller Shelter Medicine Day was declared for July 10, 2021. Recognition of Dr. Miller, this day and the Avanzino Leadership Award was received from U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer, U.S. Representative Tom Reed, New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, New York State Assemblywoman Deborah Glick, New York City Mayor’s office, City of Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick, and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer.
This is one you won’t want to miss!
Use this discussion thread to ask any questions to Dr. Lila Miller. This thread will also be updated with the recording after the live event. Hope to see you there!

CASCAR Zoom Call for California Shelters – 7/27/21 – All-Star Community Cat Panel – CASCAR – UC Davis KSMP
The cats have commandeered the mic again!
We know you’re up to your ears in cats and the need for feline-focused management solutions is intense right now. Last month the Million Cat Challenge hosted a webinar, The Top Ten: Questions and Controversy with Community Cat Programs, to address your biggest CCP programming and messaging battles. It was a great presentation by three feline heavyweights—Maddie’s Director of Feline Lifesaving Monica Frenden, HSUS Senior Analyst for Cat Protection & Policy Danielle Bays, and Stray Cat Alliance Executive Director Christi Metropol—that dove right into all the hot topics. In one short hour, they covered everything from the “why” behind community cat programming to “how” to have the friendly vs. feral conversation with your community, and why we should move away from calling community cat programming by different names (i.e. TNR, RTF, SNR). Our time flew by so quickly there were still questions rolling in when the curtains dropped.
Thankfully, the all-star panel has agreed to visit CASCAR for an aftershow, this time joined by Shelter PALS founder and attorney Brandy Kuentzel to answer your California-specific lingering legal questions. We won’t have time to go through the entire presentation again, so definitely check it out before CASCAR if you haven’t already so we can dive right into the conversation and maximize our time with this great panel. Bring your staff, your questions, and your concerns—this is your chance to streamline your cat intake protocols and messaging!
