Deb is a behavioral consultant for the Veterinary Information Network (VIN), and has authored and edited several books and book chapters, including Blackwell’s Five-Minute Veterinary Consult Clinical Companion: Canine and Feline Behavior, which she co-authored with fellow veterinary behaviorist, Jacqui Neilson, DVM, DACVB. She is the sole author of the second edition. Her other works include the BSAVA Manual of Canine and Feline Behavioural Medicine and LifeLearn’s behavior client handouts. Deb is also the lead editor of Decoding Your Dog, a book for pet owners authored by diplomates of the ACVB.

Dr. Horwitz served as president of the ACVB from 2006 to 2008. She received the Veterinarian of the Year award from Ceva Animal Health during the Purina Pro Plan Show Dogs of the Year Awards in 2012, and was named Small Animal Speaker of the Year by the North American Veterinary Community (NAVC) in 2012 and 2014.

Lecture 1:    Was my dog always this snarky?

Perhaps your dog is annoyed at being bothered all the time and now is responding aggressively toward you when you interact.  In this lesson we will discuss how and why dogs may show displeasure and aggression when we interact with them all day long.

Lecture 2:    Bark, bark, bark how can I get any work done?

Unbeknownst to you your dog spends all day looking out the window and barking! And the pulling on leash!  How to help owners get better control of their dogs’ behavior.

Lecture 3:  How do I prepare my dog for my return to work?

Now that the two of you have been home all the time together parting may be problematic.  We will discuss separation anxiety and how some simple tasks may help prepare your dog for your return to the office.

Lecture 4:   Why are my cats fighting and urine marking?

Not only is your routine disrupted, so is your cats.  Find out how to help cat owners keep things on an even keel.

Lecture 5:    Update on medications in behavioral medicine

In some cases medication, diet and nutraceuticals may be needed to keep households functioning at their best.

  • Online Meeting – 5/15/20 – Covid-19 Shelter and Rescue Preparedness Summit – American Pets Alive!

Online Meeting – 5/15/20 – Covid-19 Shelter and Rescue Preparedness Summit – American Pets Alive!

As this global pandemic worsens, what will happen to homeless pets and those entering our shelters?
You’re invited to an online summit to work towards a preparedness plan we can all utilize.
We are creating communities who care, leaders who understand the importance of relationships between pets and people, and solutions to maintain lifesaving across the nation.
The AmPA! summit offers shelters and rescues a chance to join in breakout roundtables, work with experts, and engage with leaders from communities who have been hit the hardest by this disease.
You’ll hear from Dr. Ellen Jefferson and the instructors from Maddie’s Lifesaving Academy, as well as other industry leaders, and the communities who have been affected the most. But more importantly, you’ll be able to engage face to face (digitally!) with people like you. Because not feeling alone makes this crisis a lot easier.
    How it works:
We will start together and end together. You’ll engage in real-time conversations with other attendees from around the nation in small groups of 5-10 people, in addition to bigger group discussions. You can expect the conference to be 80% participation and 20% speakers.
    What you’ll take away:
    • Access to a community of people who are in the same situation as you
    • An understanding of how to prepare for the future
Bring your boss, your colleagues, and your direct reports as well. Great teams know how to be prepared.

  • New Course Available on the ShelterMedPortal – Animal Outcomes and Adoptions During COVID-19

New Course Available on the ShelterMedPortal – Animal Outcomes and Adoptions During COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic presents the animal sheltering industry with unprecedented challenges. Shelters throughout the country (and around the world) are rising to meet these challenges. As most work to focus shelter intakes on animals with the most urgent need the challenge of finding an appropriate outcome for each animal (from the finder’s care, from the shelter, from rescue or from foster) remains a challenge.

In this focused course we will explore concepts related to finding appropriate and timely outcomes for animals presenting to shelters or being found by members of the public in this difficult time. We’ll also be exploring protocols, tools and practices that could be carried forward into the future.

Takes this newly opened course now.

A Certificate of Completion is available for 10 hours of online learning once you have finished the course.

New materials may be added over the days, weeks and months to come. If you have any materials you would like for us to review for inclusion please forward them to us at webmaster@sheltermedportal.com.
