  • National Shelter Medicine Rounds – 10/10/23 – Use of the Modified Live Canine Distemper Virus and Canine Parvovirus Vaccine in Neonatal Puppies in Animal Shelters – UW Shelter Medicine Program

National Shelter Medicine Rounds – 10/10/23 – Use of the Modified Live Canine Distemper Virus and Canine Parvovirus Vaccine in Neonatal Puppies in Animal Shelters – UW Shelter Medicine Program

The University of Wisconsin Shelter Medicine Program is thrilled to announce the next installment of National Shelter Medicine Rounds!

National Rounds is a platform for discussion of current topics relevant to shelter medicine for continued learning and collaboration.  While primarily intended or shelter veterinarians, others interested in shelter medicine are welcome to join; we believe everyone will take something away from these calls!  The next national rounds call will take place Tuesday, October 10th from 2:30 to 3: 30 Central Time.

The topic of presentation and discussion this week will be Use of the Modified Live Canine Distemper Virus and Canine Parvovirus Vaccine in Neonatal Puppies in Animal Shelters”

We know that the single best way to protect neonatal and juvenile animals from infectious disease is to care for them in an environment where exposure to disease is low (which does not describe a shelter environment!)  Despite efforts to find alternative housing options for these vulnerable animals, underage puppies still end up in animal shelters.  Previous recommendations have been to wait until 4 weeks of age to begin vaccination, potentially missing opportunities to provide protection as early as possible.  Please join us for national rounds Tuesday October 10th when Dr. Sandra Newbury (UW) and Dr. Kate Hurley (UC Davis) discuss a new recommendation for vaccination of neonatal and juvenile puppies in environments that present meaningful risk.

We hope to have an open discussion, so come with questions and feel free to unmute to participate!  Our hope is to create a space that feels safe for all participants; we ask you to follow these Accountable Space guidelines. The presentation portion of National Rounds will be recorded, but the discussion and Q & A sessions will not.

If you or someone you know would like to be added to the national rounds email list,  please send your request to nationalsheltermedicinerounds@vetmed.wisc.edu.

Webinar – 10/19/23 – Success with Dr. Overall’s Protocol for Relaxation & Case Studies – FDSA (fee applies)

This second webinar in a two-part series focuses on Dr. Overall’s Protocol for Relaxation. Dr. Overall advises us, “This protocol is the essential, basic behavior modification program on which all more complex programs using desensitization (DS) and counter-conditioning (CC) will be built.” We’ll look at the protocol itself, see examples with puppies and adult dogs, and demonstrate how to incorporate work with triggers. We’ll also review case studies demonstrating how all the protocols work together to create a foundation for behavior modification.

Webinar – 10/12/23 – Success with Dr. Overall’s Protocols for Deference and Take a Breath – FDSA (fee applies)

Can dogs really learn how to self-calm through biofeedback? Yes, they can! Veterinary behaviorist and author of the Manual of Clinical Behavioral Medicine for Dogs and Cats, Dr. Karen Overall, has provided us with the tools to help our dogs.

The first in a two-part series will focus on Dr. Overall’s Protocols for Deference and Teaching Your Dog to Take a Deep Breath. Marge will show you how she uses these protocols in her training programs. She includes video examples demonstrating the behaviors at home, away from home, and in the veterinary clinic. We’ll also review how the right types of tactile interactions can help calm dogs.
