National Shelter Medicine Rounds – 9/12/23 – Can heartworm treatment be faster, cheaper and more accessible—and still safe and effective? – University of Wisconsin Shelter Medicine Program

The University of Wisconsin Shelter Medicine Program is thrilled to announce the next installment of National Shelter Medicine Rounds!

National Rounds is a platform for discussion of current topics relevant to shelter medicine for continued learning and collaboration.  While primarily intended or shelter veterinarians, others interested in shelter medicine are welcome to join; we believe everyone will take something away from these calls!  The next national rounds call will take place Tuesday, September 12th from 2:30 to 3: 30 Central Time.

The topic of presentation and discussion this week will be “Can heartworm treatment be faster, cheaper and more accessible – and still safe and effective? (Yes. With caveats.)” by our lovely guest speakers, Dr. Linda Jacobson and Dr. Karen Ward.

Some veterinarians adhere closely to the American Heartworm Society Guidelines, while many (maybe most?) use their favourite short-cuts and modifications. This talk is an evidence-based discussion of what modifications can and can’t be justified, and where established orthodoxy and traditional approaches do and don’t make sense. It centers around the two talks we presented at the AHS Symposium in 2022 – one on our shorter, less expensive 3-dose melarsomine study, the other about an accessible alternative to melarsomine (moxi-doxy or “slow kill”). We’ll also challenge the audience to think about universal testing and the necessity of testing before prescribing preventives, treating heartworm in shelters, and more.

We hope to have an open discussion, so come with questions and feel free to unmute to participate!  Our hope is to create a space that feels safe for all participants; we ask you to follow these Accountable Space guidelines. The presentation portion of National Rounds will be recorded, but the discussion and Q & A sessions will not.

If you or someone you know would like to be added to the national rounds email list,  please send your request to nationalsheltermedicinerounds@vetmed.wisc.edu.

Animal cruelty is often linked to underlying mental health issues or illnesses, trauma, addictions, or other treatable conditions. Forensic presentence evaluations examine all of the factors surrounding an animal cruelty crime, and provide valuable information to the sentencing court in order to craft tailored sentences and reduce rates of recidivism.
