Having a puppy off leash can be a nerve-wracking affair! But being able to have your little one safely off leash provides a lot of freedom, helps prevent over-extending their leash skills, and allows for the best type of natural exercise for a growing body.
But isn’t this a super advanced skill? Isn’t this too hard for puppies?
No and no!
Puppies have some genetic pre-programming that means off-leash training is actually easier when you start earlier! Baby puppies have stronger social motivations, stronger instincts to follow, and lack competing reinforcement history from the environment – all factors that help make off leash walks and recalls much easier to introduce sooner than later, and change with time and experience to make off-leash training harder to start from scratch.
This webinar will cover several strategies to help you build your puppy’s off leash skills from the ground up, will help your recognize developmental milestones that will mean changing your strategy as your puppy ages, and help you discover the benefits of a shared trust that comes when both you and your puppy are comfortable in off-leash situations. The skills covered in this webinar include recall, attention, and boundaries as they relate to being off leash. We’ll also discuss the types of environments that you’ll want to seek out to best teach these skills and the types of challenges that you’ll want to be aware of and plan for, depending on your puppy’s genetics! Finally, we’ll discuss under what conditions a particular puppy may not be ready for off-leash training.
