    Conference – 8/10/23 to 8/12/23 – 2023 Best Friends National Conference – Best Friends

At the Best Friends National Conference presented by Petco Love, you’ll learn how to make an impact in your community from presenters from different backgrounds and organization types, including leaders in animal welfare, marketing, DE&I, government relations, and more — and all while having fun!

Plus, you’ll make meaningful connections with fellow animal welfare volunteers and staff members from across the country.

Here’s a brief highlight of what we have lined up so far this year:

    • How to Best Serve the Underserved: In this session, we’ll discuss how high-volume shelters can better cater to their communities’ needs, and by extension the animals’ needs. You’ll learn the best practices for implementing community-oriented programs at a high-volume organization.
    • Taking Back Your Lifesaving Power – How to Deal With Backlash From the Media and Community: During this interactive session, shelters, rescue groups, and other organizations in attendance will discover the power of language, learn how to deal with backlash, and find out how to communicate effectively and be transparent.
    • Turning “I Can’t” Into “Why Not?” – A Shelter’s Journey Toward Lifesaving: From high euthanasia rates to high save rates, this session speaks to rural, Southern shelters that are historically underfunded and understaffed and shows that, with a drive to save lives, anything is possible.

In addition to all the engaging sessions, when you register you’ll enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast and hot lunch each day of the conference, access to our app, a closing celebration party, access to the Hub to shop and mingle with exhibitors, and so much more.

If you register by June 9, the registration fee is only $295. There’s no need to enter a special code. The $100 discount will be taken off automatically when you register. Beginning June 10, the price increases to $395.

  • Webinar – 4/11/23 – Crisis Sheltering for Pets: Keeping People and Pets Together – HASS

Webinar – 4/11/23 – Crisis Sheltering for Pets: Keeping People and Pets Together – HASS

There are times when someone can’t take care of their pet on a temporary basis, because of a medical emergency, loss of housing, or another short-term crisis. The traditional sheltering response is to permanently separate the pet from their owner, but more and more organizations are providing crisis sheltering instead—boarding the pet at the shelter, or placing them in a foster home, for a limited amount of time. How does crisis sheltering work, and how can you get started? We’ve gathered experts from multiple crisis sheltering organizations and programs for a live panel discussion that will leave you inspired.

Join us in conversation with Shoshana Mostoller, Community Engagement Manager for Chesapeake Humane Society; Jodi Polanski, Founder and Executive Director of Lost Our Home Pet Rescue; Kristina Pulsipher, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Ruff Haven Crisis Sheltering; Andy Bond, Co-Founder and Co-CEO of BestyBnB, and our moderator Vincent Medley, Director of Human Animal Support Services. We’ll discuss what crisis sheltering looks like in each of their organizations, challenges they’ve overcome, and their best tips for getting started.

  • Webinar – 5/16/23 – Emotions Inside Out – Dog iBox (fee applies)

Webinar – 5/16/23 – Emotions Inside Out – Dog iBox (fee applies)

What does joy feel like to you? Is it the same for the person sitting next to you? Is it the same for the animals in your care? Are emotions pre-wired in the brain or are they learned? Is the topic of emotions even relevant to training animals? These are just a few of the interesting and important questions that surround the topic of emotions. In this session, we will focus on contemporary approaches to understanding emotions with action potential for living and learning with animals.

  • Webinar – 4/5/23 – The Importance of Transparency in Sheltering and Rescue – PPG (fee applies)

Webinar – 4/5/23 – The Importance of Transparency in Sheltering and Rescue – PPG (fee applies)

Much like the lack of transparency in dog training, there’s also a lack of transparency in sheltering and rescue organizations. This webinar will review key questions adopters, donors and those looking to support organizations should look for, red flags to be aware of and how organizations can improve their transparency with the public. As behavior professionals, we’ve likely all had clients who were well-intentioned adopting a dog that turned out to be more than they bargained for, resulting in emotional and financial duress. It’s up to all of us to keep groups accountable, educate clients and raise awareness about the importance of transparency.

Webinar – 4/4/23 – Quick! Hit PAUSE: Using Controlled Setups for Reactive Dogs with Suzanne Clothier – PPG (fee applies)

Handlers of reactive dogs struggle to find ways to help their dogs feel less worried, overwhelmed or pushed past their thresholds. But progress can be slow, particularly if the dog continues to be triggered despite the handler’s best efforts. Many handlers are discouraged, embarrassed or frustrated when the dog is triggered. Why does this happen so often? This webinar dives into what you need to know to help reactive dogs through carefully controlled set-ups.

If you’ve ever wished for a PAUSE button on life to help your dog, this webinar is for you. The practical information provided will help you create successful training moments. Find out why so many clients and their dogs have benefited from this sensible approach to thin slicing for success.

    Learning Objectives

    • The importance of controlled setups to facilitate success, vs. “training in the wild” where stimuli are not under your direction or control
    • How to use the “pause button” – how to control stimuli
    • Understanding your dog’s triggers (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, olfactory, social, chase)
    • The Stimulus Gradients – the holy trinity of dog training: Distance, intensity & duration
    • Using Line of View and Field of View in the real world with existing structures, objects, vehicles, etc.

  • Webinar – 3/29/23 – Predation Substitute Training – A Holistic Training Program To Stop Dogs From Chasing! – PPG (fee applies)

Webinar – 3/29/23 – Predation Substitute Training – A Holistic Training Program To Stop Dogs From Chasing! – PPG (fee applies)

Conventional training protocols stifle the dog’s natural predatory behaviors through punishing or constantly forcing them to return. These restrictive protocols work against the dog’s nature and against what they want most: to go for a hunt!

Predation is an inner need that makes our dogs happy. Suppressing those natural urges is like putting a lid on a boiling pot. Eventually, that pressure needs to escape, and without a proper outlet, it’s probably going to get messy.

Predation Substitute Training (PST) is a motivation-based and need-oriented training program, designed to stop uncontrolled predatory chasing and to provide safe outlets for our dog’s natural drive.

Instead of making discipline the nagging factor that spoils the fun, this training system will help dogs and their guardians to grow as a team and go hunting together!

In this presentation Simone is going to discuss:

    • What is predation?
    • Why do our dogs love to hunt?
    • Why is predatory behaviour so hard to interrupt?
    • How and why does Predation Substitute Training work?
