Webinar – 11/10/21 – Webinar: Medical Mimics in Dogs: When Behavioral Symptoms are the Tip of the Iceberg – ACVB (fee applies)

Behavioral symptoms are often the first signs of illness owners notice. When those symptoms look like biting, panic disorders, compulsive behaviors, and many others it can be tempting to call in the veterinary psychiatry team. However, many underlying medical conditions can cause similar changes in behavior. Come to this lecture to learn how to identify when a patient’s behavioral symptoms require further medical diagnostics.

Dr. E’Lise Christensen DVM is a board-certified veterinary behaviorist and an international lecturer and author. Dr. C received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 2002. She first became interested in veterinary behavior as a high school student when she worked at a veterinary practice and began training animals for pet therapy at a local substance abuse facility. While in veterinary school she researched separation anxiety in shelter dogs, was an assistant trainer at an animal shelter, and studied with numerous board-certified veterinary behaviorists.

After veterinary school Dr. C began a rotating small animal internship at SouthPaws Veterinary Referral Center in Springfield, Virginia. While working there she continued her studies in veterinary behavior. She practiced feline-only medicine in Arlington, Virginia and general medicine in Bloomingdale, New Jersey before entering the Behavior Residency Program at Cornell University in 2004. During her residency she researched the behavior of dogs, cats, and horses and treated behavioral problems in a number of different species. Her most cited research involved evaluating the efficacy of canine temperament tests in the shelter system.

Dr. C is board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists and a member of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior (AVSAB) Speaker’s Bureau and the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Webinar – 11/11/21 – Ethological Contributions to Behavior Problems in Dogs – FDSA (fee applies)

Ethically and effectively working cases as a canine behavior professional requires us to perform both initial and ongoing comprehensive analysis of all contributing elements to a dog’s behavior. Participants will be introduced to Kim Brophey’s widely celebrated and endorsed L.E.G.S.® system of Applied Ethology as a simple and practical framework for doing so – bridging multiple scientific disciplines and delivering new depths of understanding by organizing the critical components of all animal behavior. Learn how to identify, understand, and integrate the full scope of potential factors influencing behavior – Learned, Environmental, Genetic, and unique internal conditions of the individual animal’s own Self – in order to prevent misunderstandings and incorrect assessment of cases, obstacles to the progress of behavior modification, inadequate safety and management provisions, and even life-threatening circumstances for both animals and people.

Webinar – 11/4/21 – The Hidden Life of Behavior Chains: Breaking, Repairing, and Maintaining Behavior Sequences – FDSA (fee applies)

Behavior chains are wonderfully simple–just use cues to reinforce cued behaviors–yet it’s so easy to get drawn into complexities. Especially when things start to go wrong, we can get caught up in superstitions or wishful thinking (“If we just keep doing it, he’ll start to get it right! Any moment now!”).

Let’s talk about the care and feeding of behavior chains, how to maintain them reliably and how to repair them efficiently when something goes wrong. We’ll even discuss when we might want to break them, and of course how to build strong chains when we want to keep them.

By the end of this session, you will know how to identify the broken link in a chain (which may not be the one which looks broken), how to keep chains reliable, and how to test your chain before you assemble it.
