Webinar – 7/22/21 – Preventing Owner Surrender: Creating Low Cost Veterinary Services in Your Community, A Face to Face Conversation with Veterinary Medical Experts – HASS

One of the top reasons people surrender their animals to shelters is because they can’t afford necessary medical care. Low or no-cost veterinary services are needed to support communities so people can keep their pets.

Join this virtual, face-to-face event featuring some of the prominent leaders in shelter medicine to unpack how you can provide these services by modifying your shelter’s infrastructure and creating community partnerships. We will talk through the External Facing Medical Care toolkits, answer your biggest questions, and discuss what is next for the future of community-centered veterinary services.

Get hands on advice from veterinary experts, Michael Blackwell, DVM, MPH; Ellen Jefferson, DVM; Lauren Overman, DVM; Erin Katribe, DVM, MS; Jeremy Prupas, VMD; Kelley Meyers, DVM; and Maria Anselmo.

  • Webinar – 7/21/21 – “The Need for Veterinary Involvement in the Airline Industry” with Dr. Nelva Bryant – Black DVM Network

Webinar – 7/21/21 – “The Need for Veterinary Involvement in the Airline Industry” with Dr. Nelva Bryant – Black DVM Network

Animals are transported domestically and internationally via air for zoos, aquariums, and research facilities. Animals are also transported for commercial purposes and as personal pets. Specific animal welfare regulations and policies must be abided by to ensure these animals arrive to their destinations safely. Veterinary involvement in the airline industry is needed to explain the regulations, ensure compliance with animal welfare regulations, educate animal shippers/animal owners of the regulations, assist with monitoring the health and welfare of animals during air transport, and guide decisions related to the transportation of animals. During the presentation, Dr. Bryant will discuss how having veterinary involvement in the airline industry could benefit animal welfare.

  • Webinar – 7/5/21 – Canine Welfare: How Do We Measure It and What Can We Learn Using These Measures in the Animal Shelter? – PPG (fee applies)

Webinar – 7/5/21 – Canine Welfare: How Do We Measure It and What Can We Learn Using These Measures in the Animal Shelter? – PPG (fee applies)

Considerable efforts have been made to improve the outcomes for dogs arriving to animal shelters, resulting in substantial increases in the number of dogs adopted and returned to their owners as well as reductions in euthanasia. Over this time, the role of the animal shelter has changed as well, from one of temporary holding to longer lengths of stay as animals with more complex behavioral and medical needs are placed. Thus, we must also evolve the care that we provide to these dogs to adequately meet their welfare needs.

This session will discuss how we can best assess welfare and promising measures found across the scientific literature that can help us better understand dogs’ experiences in the shelter. With these measures in mind, the presenter will describe recent research investigating the effects of housing and social interaction on shelter dog welfare. By identifying meaningful welfare measures, interventions intended to improve the lives of shelter-living dogs can be tested and, when impactful, implemented in animal shelters.

    • Identify stressors in the shelter environment that may compromise canine welfare.
    • Describe the difficulties inherent in measuring welfare.
    • Explain the different physiological, cognitive, behavioral, and health measures that can be used to measure canine welfare in the shelter.
    • Summarize how housing and interactions with other dogs may affect shelter dog welfare.
    • Develop a plan about how you could measure the welfare of dogs in your animal shelter.

    About Your Presenter

Lisa Gunter Ph.D MA CBCC-KA is the Maddie’s Fund Research Fellow at Arizona State University in the Department of Psychology and conducts her research in the Canine Science Collaboratory. She currently leads the Maddie’s Fund Nationwide Fostering Study. The goal of Dr. Gunter’s research is to better the lives of dogs and, to this aim, she has investigated the breed labeling of shelter dogs, their breed heritage, post-adoption interventions focused on owner retention, various types of fostering, enrichment, and behavioral indicators of welfare for kenneled dogs. She has published her research in scientific journals, presented her findings at numerous conferences, and received national and international media attention for her work.

Prior to her graduate school, she worked as a behavior consultant and trainer in San Francisco where she taught group classes and consulted with owners experiencing issues of fear, anxiety, and aggression with their dogs. Her interest in canine behavior began in 2002 as an animal shelter volunteer, training dogs in basic skills and assisting in shelter dog playgroups. That interest grew into a career where she managed the behavior programs of several shelters throughout the West. During graduate school, Dr. Gunter co-founded Wagfield Academy, an online dog training and behavior resource for owners, and the Institute for Shelter Dogs with Dr. Erica Feuerbacher, where they combine the latest in shelter research with the current best practices in workshops and consultations for staff and volunteers.

Webinar – 8/3/21 – Did They Actually Live Happily Ever After? Debunking Translocation Myths – NACA/Justice Clearinghouse

It’s commonly thought that removing wild animals from our backyards and neighborhoods and releasing them into seemingly suitable habitat miles away is a humane approach for solving conflicts with wildlife. But is it actually? This webinar will delve into what truly happens to wild animals after they’re trapped and moved out of the home ranges they are familiar with and into unknown habitat. We will also discuss strategies that offer sound alternatives to capture and removal.

The National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership.

Founded in 1954, the Humane Society of the United States and its affiliates around the globe fight the big fights to end suffering for all animals. Together with millions of supporters, the HSUS takes on puppy mills, factory farms, trophy hunts, animal testing and other cruel industries, and together with its affiliates, rescues and provides direct care for over 100,000 animals every year. The HSUS works on reforming corporate policy, improving and enforcing laws and elevating public awareness on animal issues.
