Webinar – 8/14/21 and 8/21/21 – Dr. Tim Lewis Presents The Biology of Dogs – PuppyWorks (fee applies)

An irreverent Fun Tour Of All The Major Systems That Make Dogs So Special & How To Make Them Work Well Together!

Our dogs are far more than the sum of their parts, but knowing what’s inside them matters. In this two-part webinar series, we will look at the major systems that make our dogs so special, and then look at how to make those systems work well together, and for a very long time.

Participants will learn some amazing things about their dogs, but will also learn how to use that information to enhance the relationship and to maximize the precious time together. We will include opportunities to discuss common issues and for questions.

There is no conceivable way to diagnose your dog in a webinar setting; besides I am a research biologist not a veterinarian. You will learn how to better communicate with veterinarians and to your clients. For the professional, this series should help you explain better what is happening with your client’s dogs.

    Because you asked:

Each session consists of two roughly 70 minute presentations with a 15 minute break in-between. Tim will answer questions throughout the presentation as they arise .

As always, whether you make the live sessions or not, you will be able to access a complete recording of each session for 1 year.

  • Webinar – 7/28/21 – Stress, Recuperation Rates and Elizabethan Collars – Let’s Smash the ‘Cone of Shame’ and Replace it with the ‘Sunflower Shield’ – PPG (fee applies)

Webinar – 7/28/21 – Stress, Recuperation Rates and Elizabethan Collars – Let’s Smash the ‘Cone of Shame’ and Replace it with the ‘Sunflower Shield’ – PPG (fee applies)

After surgery, a pet is often sent home wearing an Elizabethan collar – also referred to as an E collar, Buster collar, or plastic cone – to prevent licking and chewing of the incision which could cause irritation, infection, and delayed healing.  Could non-compliance lead to delayed healing?  Could the cone itself lead to extended recovery time if the pet experiences fear, anxiety, or stress while wearing the cone? And, if so, what can we do to about?

Join the presenter as she delves into scientific, observational, and anecdotal evidence regarding the impact of owner-compliance and stress on recovery rates and provides a solution to help make wearing of the Elizabethan collar less stressful for the dog, pet guardians and veterinarians.

    Learning objectives:

    • Understand how fear, anxiety, and stress may directly or indirectly affect wound healing.
    • Understand the potential negative impact of Elizabethan collars on animal welfare.
    • Learn how non-compliance of Elizabethan collar wearing may lead to delayed recuperation rates.
    • Understand the potential for delayed healing which may be experienced by some dogs wearing Elizabethan collars.
    • Learn what trainers, guardians, vets, and pet care providers can do to help take the fear, anxiety, and stress, out of the Elizabethan collar, setting the scene for a happier pet and the potential for a speedier recovery rate.

  • Webinar – 7/22/21 – Eat, Play, Love! Developing Your New Relationship With Your Puppy by Deb Jones – FDSA (fee applies)

Webinar – 7/22/21 – Eat, Play, Love! Developing Your New Relationship With Your Puppy by Deb Jones – FDSA (fee applies)

This webinar is all about the start of your journey with your puppy. If we’re lucky, we are starting out on a 15 year or so relationship. That’s much longer than many human relationships! We will talk about ways to set the tone for a long term mutually enjoyable partnership. People are often uncertain how to set the parameters in the early days with a new puppy. What’s important to do right away and what can (and often should) wait until later when the puppy is more mature? Doing the right things at the right times is really important, but how do we know what to do and when to do it? Join Deb for a thorough discussion of the most important concepts and skills to introduce to your pup. She’ll talk about the importance of discovering valuable reinforcers while developing your relationship and establishing rules. Her 3 Rs for puppy raising of Relationship, Reinforcers, and Rules will serve as a clear guide for your puppy training in the early days.

While food is one of the most universal and valuable reinforcers we can use, people often take it for granted and don’t consider how to grow and maintain it over time. We’ll consider how to develop and increase interest and food, and how to use it thoughtfully not only to reinforce behaviors but to build your relationship. When it comes to toys and play we will give you some clear ideas and guidelines for introducing toys, determining your pup’s natural play preferences, and putting structure around the games we play together.

Speaking of structure, we will also consider the importance of your key rules for life and how to introduce and maintain those with consistency. Your rules may well be different than mine, and that’s okay. We all have different situations and care about different aspects of living with dogs.

When it comes to a new puppy we all want to do it “right” this time and avoid our previous mistakes. In the process we will likely make new and different mistakes. That’s okay, life with a puppy isn’t about being perfect. It’s about doing our best to be the kind of life and training partners our pups need and deserve.
