CASCAR Zoom Call for California Shelters – 6/29/21 – Tom Kremer on RTO-Focused Data Analysis – CASCAR – UC Davis KSMP

Some of you probably already saw Tom Kremer’s article in Frontiers journal, “A New Web-Based Tool for RTO-Focused Animal Shelter Data Analysis.” This Tuesday, June 29, Tom will show us how the team at Dallas Animal Services was able to use this tool to document where dogs were coming from in the community and how far from home they were found, providing robust support for the idea that most stray dogs are best served by efforts to reunite them with their families in the neighborhood of origin, ideally by helping finders to bypass a trip to the shelter for person and pet. Tom will give us some of the key insights from the study and answer questions about how this online tool can be adapted for use by any shelter.

This might be a good one to invite your field officers to join, and also maybe the data geeks on your team. Hope you can join us, this should be fun!

Webinar – 7/8/21 – Building and Maintaining a Productive High Volume Foster Program That Serves the Animals YOU Need Help With – NACA/Justice Clearinghouse

Foster programs are a necessity in any animal shelter or rescue but creating and maintaining one that provides consistent positive output can be a challenge.  Foster homes reduce in-shelter population, reduce stress on staff and animals, and provide much needed real-life information about adoptable animals.  The challenge is creating a foster base that will consistently help with the animals your shelter needs help with; the medically challenged and/or behaviorally challenged population. What you will learn:

    • How to break down your foster program and rebuild it for success
    • The benefits of opening your foster program up to include all adoptable animals in your shelter and why that variety will help you sustain your program
    • How to streamline communication with foster parents

The National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership.

Online Event – 7/22/21 – The Roundtable: How Loud Can You Bark? Hellraising vs Fundraising – The AAWA

Big brands get to have the biggest voices and attention, while organizations doing the most good are often overlooked. Nonprofit social impact orgs such as animal shelters can’t compete with the $$$$ budgets big brands dedicated to media buying, production, talent, product, creative, etc. So how can animal welfare fundraisers and marketers raise hell together, to shake it up and find new and innovative ways to increase donor support and drive sustainable revenue?

Hear from animal welfare leaders whose organizations have significantly increased engagement with their donors. Panelists will share their personal stories, lessons learned, and how partnership drove sustainable success, including how a shelter recently embarked on a 5-year plan to significantly increase its level of donor support.

Both marketers and fundraisers will gain insights and inspiration to create effective strategies. Questions from the audience will follow the roundtable discussion.

The Association’s Roundtable series features leaders discussing emerging and critical issues in animal welfare.

Moderated by Jim Tedford, President and CEO, The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement

Online Course – 7/7/21 – ACO Seminar Series – Best Friends

    Community Engagement: The Lifesaving Philosophy
9-10:30am (PST): Register for this course here.
The term “community engagement” gets thrown around a lot, as if it is  something that an officer can do if they have a few extra minutes.  To  unlock the full potential of community engagement, however, we must  start thinking of it as less of a project and more of a state of mind.  This lifesaving philosophy will not only help save the lives of animals  but could potentially save an officer’s life as well.  In this course  you will learn how embracing community engagement as a mindset can, and  will, increase lifesaving efforts and officer safety.

Advanced Return to Owner in the Field: Beyond the Scanner
11am-12:30pm (PST): Register for this course here.
Animal control officers are playing a much larger role today in the  reduction of shelter intake by choosing to identify and return stray dogs to their families without bringing them into the shelter, but all  too often officers stop looking for an owner was they find that the animal has no ID tags or microchip. This workshop highlights successful  efforts from agencies across the country that have shown to  significantly increase the field RTO rate for those animals without  obvious identification.

    Community Cats: Mitigating Feline Nuisance
11:00am-12:30pm (PST): Register for this course here.
This session will cover how to respond to residents who don’t want  community cats, also known as feral, stray or free-roaming cats, on  their property. We’ll discuss strategic placement of deterrents,  de-escalation techniques and information sharing regarding the long-term  effectiveness of managing populations of community cats after  sterilization.

CE Units will be provided by Best Friends after viewing each session.
