Webinar – 6/25/21 – The Top Ten: Questions and Controversy with Community Cat Programs – MCC and Maddie’s Fund

Are you considering launching, or have recently launched, a RTF/SNR/TNR program and are now dealing with an onslaught of questions and/or pushback from your community about why you’re putting cats/kittens back where they came from? Are you being accused of abandonment? Wreaking havoc on the environment, birds, gardens, peace AND quiet? Although it may not feel like it at times, you and your community share the same goal. Whether you identify as an animal welfare professional, a bird lover, someone who just wants these cats out of your yard, or all of the above, we’re all here for the most effective, sustainable way to reduce the number of cats living outside. Our challenge lies in communicating the benefits of a proven strategy that can often seem counterintuitive to those new to feline management.

    Join this all-star panel:
Maddie’s® Director of Feline Lifesaving, Monica Frenden
HSUS Senior Analyst, Cat Protection & Policy, Danielle Bays
Executive Director of Stray Cat Alliance, Christi Metropole

They will give answers to the top ten questions you receive about TNR, SNR, returning cats, and let us know how to message community cat program alignment with our universally-held goal of managing feline populations.

Want to be sure your question is addressed? Email #allthecats@millioncatchallenge.org and we’ll queue it up for showtime.

  • Webinar – 6/9/21 – Thinking Outside the Snot: Shelter Medicine Approaches to Upper Respiratory Infections in Cats – EveryCat Health Foundation

Webinar – 6/9/21 – Thinking Outside the Snot: Shelter Medicine Approaches to Upper Respiratory Infections in Cats – EveryCat Health Foundation

Cats in animal shelters are uniquely prone to upper respiratory infections, aka URI or “the cat common cold”. These infections are complicated. They are inextricably tied to stress and crowding in cats. They can be caused by a number of viruses and bacteria. You can’t vaccinate or treat your way out of an established URI problem. Affected cats are often treated with antibiotics, even though infections are often viral, and this can result in poor appetite, vomiting, diarrhea and resistant infections. Chronic URI can be a nightmare for shelters and adopters, and can sometimes cause severe health issues.

This presentation will focus on newer shelter medicine approaches to URI – prevention strategies that have succeeded to the point that many shelters no longer have a “URI problem”; when to isolate affected cats and when that’s not needed; when diagnostic tests are needed and which ones are useful; when to treat and with what; and how to manage a newly adopted cat that is sneezing. RACE Approved!

Dr. Linda Jacobson obtained her veterinary degree in Pretoria, South Africa, in 1986, and went on to specialize in companion animal internal medicine. She has been at the Toronto Humane Society since 2010, where she is currently Senior Manager, Shelter Medicine Advancement.

In 2015 she completed a Graduate Certificate in Shelter Medicine through the University of Florida. Linda is co-founder and President and Treasurer of the Ontario Shelter Medicine Association. She serves on the Standard of Care Working Group of the College of Veterinarians of Ontario and Toronto Humane Society’s Unsocial Cat Working Group.  Her professional passions and interests include accessible veterinary care, infectious diseases, animal hoarding, and evidence-based medicine.

  • Webinar – 6/17/21 – The Importance of Agency – FDSA (fee applies)

Webinar – 6/17/21 – The Importance of Agency – FDSA (fee applies)

Agency describes the overall amount of control an animal has over its environment. Control is a big buzzword in the dog world right now. There is an increasing call from professionals to give our dogs more control. How do agency and control actually impact behavior? Why are they so important? Luckily for trainers, we have many decades worth of research on this topic! And the research suggests that providing animals with a sense of agency is critically important for promoting their emotional wellbeing. It turns out that control changes how the brain functions and can influence the animal’s entire world view!

This talk will start with a discussion of learned helplessness and what it tells us about the impact of lack of control. I will cover how control (or lack of it) influences brain function and how it can change an animal’s approach to his or her environment in dramatic ways. Finally, we will talk about different ways of increasing control for our dogs. This webinar is great for puppies and adult dogs and for pet owners and professionals alike.

  • Five Essential Webinars for Kitten Season

Five Essential Webinars for Kitten Season

The kittens are coming! Are you ready? Depending on where you are, kitten season is here or fast-approaching. It’s a challenging time of the year for young cats and shelters, but the five-part kitten management webinar series from Million Cat Challenge and Royal Canin is here to help you—and the most vulnerable animals in your community—survive and thrive.

From rethinking kitten intake to recruiting foster volunteers and exploring innovative adoption technology, every webinar is packed with tips and tools from experts in animal sheltering and kitten rescue to guide you step-by-step through providing the best kitten care and maximizing your shelter’s resources. Don’t stress—follow these steps!

    Step 1: Make a plan.

The best time to plan potential kitten pathways is before that litter of very cute kittens arrives at the shelter. In “Kitten Intake Decisions in Animal Shelters,” KSMP Director Dr. Kate Hurley lays out what kittens really do need from us and identifies the most successful kitten management strategies, and “Kitten Lady” Hannah Shaw explains her CASA method for deciding when to intervene. Reduce decision fatigue and set the stage for positive outcomes with an internal kitten flowchart, so that everyone in your organization is on the same page, and post a community-facing flowchart like Shaw’s on your website. Watch the webinar.

Step 2: Empower your community to support kittens where they are.

The best place for young kittens, unless they are sick or injured, is not the shelter: we know kittens have the best chance of survival with Mama Cat as their caretaker. “Support for Kittens in the Field” outlines innovative ways to convey this message to your community and engage well-meaning finders in caring for kittens outside the shelter. Million Cat Challenge Co-founder Dr. Julie Levy talks with Dr. Heather Kennedy (KC Pet Project), Kristen Hassen-Auerbach (Pima Animal Care Center), and Nick Lippincott (Orange County Animal Services) to find out what field officers, volunteers and fosters are doing to give kittens the best chance of survival. Orange County’s Wait ‘Til 8 Program is a great example of how to divert intake and recruit finders through your organization’s website. Watch the webinar.

Step 3: Build and nurture your foster network.

Kittens who are on a path to adoption are healthiest and happiest in foster homes. For “Foster Greatness” Team Shelter USA’s Dr. Sara Pizano joins Doobert founder Chris Roy, Foster Programs Manager Sarah Aguilar, Community Engagement Coordinator Sarah Cano and others for a rundown of how to recruit, train and onboard volunteers quicker, better and faster. Watch the webinar.

Step 4: Assess kitten care in your shelter.

What about when the right place for a kitten is the shelter—how can you provide the best care to the best outcome? In “Kitten Care in the Shelter,” former shelter and emergency veterinarian and KSMP Online Education Coordinator Dr. Cindi Delany delves into pathway planning, wellness, pediatric spay/neuter, and discusses which shelter protocols are impacting flow-through and length-of-stay, which kittens should stay in the shelter and for how long, what you should consider when modernizing your sterilization protocols, and how technology is advancing our shelters by maximizing our efficiency. Watch the webinar.

Step 5: Move kittens into their forever homes.

This is what makes kitten season sweet—matching kittens with adopters who can’t wait to take them home! “Going Home” is all about how to use technology to make adoptions faster and easier for shelters of all sizes, while making better matches between pets and adopters. Hear from innovators like AdoptaPet.com’s April Harris, Adoptimize creator Jessica Schleder, Adopets founder Artur Sousa, Pensacola Humane’s Darra Flanagan and Aly Martinez, and Oregon’s Cat Adoption Team Executive Director Karen Green. Watch the webinar.
