Cytologic evaluation of fine needle aspirate samples can rapidly provide valuable information with minimal cost. In a shelter setting, cytology can be used to guide treatment, surgical planning, and any special adoption considerations. In this session, we will review specimen collection, slide preparation, and microscopic evaluation. Proper collection and preparation of specimens is necessary for appropriate microscopic interpretation. Several tips and tricks will be provided to improve preparation of cytologic specimens. The cytologic appearance of inflammation, benign neoplasia, and malignant neoplasia will be presented. At the end of the session, attendees will have the confidence to collect, prepare, and review routine cytology specimens. Additionally, we will cover various pathologist consultation services available for challenging cytology cases.
