CASCAR Zoom Call for California Shelters – 6/1/21 – Sheltering by Appointment – CASCAR – UC Davis KSMP

If there’s one thing you’ve shared with us over the duration of this pandemic, it’s how beneficial more control over shelter intake and, more broadly, the shelter environment has been for both staff and animals. Some of you are rethinking how you’ll handle adoptions going forward, many of you have committed to reopening with service by appointment as the new norm, and others are trying on a hybrid approach.

As California prepares to fully reopen in less than three weeks, we’re opening the CASCAR floor to hear from you this Tuesday: When it comes to sheltering by appointment, where are you now? What’s working and where are the biggest wins being gained so far? Where are the biggest challenges and fears still hanging out? What’s the one thing still standing in your way?

  • Webinar – 6/3/21 – Working with Dogs That Lack Enthusiasm – FDSA (fee applies)

Webinar – 6/3/21 – Working with Dogs That Lack Enthusiasm – FDSA (fee applies)

Some dogs just don’t appear to be enthusiastic about training. This may present as a lack of enthusiasm for all training related activities, or it may be specific to a certain sport or individual task (e.g. dumbbell retrieve). In some cases, the dog may even appear to lose interest in training after a period of what appeared to be enthusiastic, engaged work.

    The observable behaviors may include:

    • Responding slowly to cues, needing repeated cues, or stopping responding altogether.
    • Leaving you or the training area during a session.
    • Avoiding eye contact with you or the task.
    • Engaging in displacement behaviors such as sniffing the ground during an active training session.
    • Developing a reluctance to join you at the start of a training session.

In this webinar we discuss common reasons why these behaviors may occur, including:

    • Feeling fearful, anxious, frustrated, or conflicted.
    • Physical limitations.
    • Low levels of mental stamina.
    • Sensitivity to making mistakes.
    • Sensitivity to changes in the environment.
    • Impact of prior learning history.

Most importantly, we also discuss simple strategies to put the enthusiasm back into the training process, for both the dog and the human!

  • Webinar – 5/27/21 – Pet Stores, Puppy Mills and Local Action to End the Problem – Texas Unites (fee applies)

Webinar – 5/27/21 – Pet Stores, Puppy Mills and Local Action to End the Problem – Texas Unites (fee applies)

Over 300 communities, including several in Texas, have banned the sale of puppy mill dogs in pet stores. These humane pet store ordinances are drying up the market for puppy mill dogs and helping to easing the suffering of breeding dogs who are routinely confined in tiny, filthy cages until they can no longer produce another litter of puppies. Passing a local ordinance, even if your community does not currently have a puppy selling pet store, is a vital step in helping bring about an end to this cruel business model.

You will hear from two speakers who have decades of lobbying experience and have been at the forefront of this campaign. You’ll learn how to get an ordinance drafted, introduced and enacted into law. You’ll learn what hurdles that puppy mill lobbyist will throw in your path, and how to overcome them. This workshop is a must for those who are passionate about ending puppy mills.

Lauren Loney, Texas State Director, State Affairs, The Humane Society of the United States
Amy Jesse, Public Policy Director, Stop Puppy Mills Campaign, The Humane Society of the United States
