  • Lifesaving Legal Advice from Shelter PALS

Lifesaving Legal Advice from Shelter PALS

Quiz time! Take a minute to see if you know the answers to these common questions:

    • Can vaccines be administered during holding periods?
    • Do veterinarians have to administer rabies vaccines or can that be delegated?
    • Does your shelter need a premise permit?
    • When is a VCPR necessary for treatment?
    • How do protocols change if you’re treating an animal without an identifiable owner?

If you’re confused about the legalities involved when shelter staff and volunteers take on certain medical tasks, you’re not alone! Luckily, attorneys Brandy Kuentzel and Bruce Wagman of San Francisco SPCA Shelter PALS are here to help you understand foundational law basics and optimize your shelter’s medical team.

Last week the legal expert duo demystified these questions and others in a presentation for CASCAR, the California Animal Shelter COVID Action Response group, and we’re excited to share it with you.

In this one-hour video, Brandy and Bruce clarify what registered vet technicians, vet assistants, and volunteers can—and can’t—do, guide you through optimizing care during intake, emergency treatment scenarios, and public vaccination clinics, and reveal why having SOPs and standing orders in place can be your shelter’s superpower.

  • Webinar – 1/21/21 – Beyond Covid: Planning and Forecasting Your 2021 Fundraising Revenue – The AAWA

Webinar – 1/21/21 – Beyond Covid: Planning and Forecasting Your 2021 Fundraising Revenue – The AAWA

2020 will be a memorable year for countless reasons. For fundraising, and specifically animal welfare fundraising, this year presented both a dose of reality and a strategic opportunity.  Many animal welfare organizations saw an increase in the demand for their services, an increase in their level of recognition in the community and an increase in their fundraising.  For others, the demand and recognition increased while the fundraising did not.

Either way, during this webinar we will share insight and thoughts on how 2021 may shape up and provide you tools and strategies to retain your 2020 donors while also projecting fundraising revenue in 2021.  Participants will leave the webinar with a formula to forecast revenue as well as applicable strategies to increase individual and corporate support in 2021.

This webinar is geared towards animal welfare professionals who seek to sustain or increase the current level of fundraising at their organization.

This live and recorded program is approved for 1 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credit and pending approval for CFRE.

  • Webinar – 1/14/21 – Placing Behaviorally Challenged Dogs – The AAWA and NEFHS

Webinar – 1/14/21 – Placing Behaviorally Challenged Dogs – The AAWA and NEFHS

Should you or shouldn’t you? When it comes to placing behaviorally challenged dogs, that is the question.

The unintended consequence of reduced shelter populations has been an increase in placements of challenging dogs. We see success stories on social media and television shows, but is there more to the story? What is their quality of life – and that of their owners? Learn more about what effect these dogs are having on the families that love them and the communities they live in.

This panel will bring together research from Seana Dowling-Guyer about what happens to dogs after adoption, with post-adoption case studies from professional dog trainer Melissa McCue-McGrath, and shelter trends and perspectives from Mike Keiley from MSPCA.

This 90-minute panel and Q&A is part of a 3-part series from The New England Federation of Humane Societies (NEFHS) hosted by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement.

This session has been pre-approved for 1.5 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits.

Webinar – 1/13/21 – The Veterinary-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR) within Shelter Systems – The AAWA and ASV

The VCPR (Veterinarian-Client-Patient Relationship) has become an especially important consideration in animal sheltering as we navigate the challenges posed by the current pandemic. In this webinar, we will learn what the VCPR is, why it is important legally and ethically, and how to define it within shelter systems. Case examples will consider specific situations such as telemedicine, transport, and health certificates. The information presented in this webinar will benefit all types of animal welfare organizations (including shelters large and small, rescue, foster-based, transport, temporary); any shelter professional who is involved in medical decision-making (including executive directors, medical directors, foster coordinators); and veterinarians (including full-time shelter veterinarians, contract and relief shelter veterinarians, private practice veterinarians that work with animal welfare organizations).

This session is part of the Shelter Medicine series, a collaboration between the Association of Shelter Veterinarians and The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement.

This live and recorded program is pending approval for:

    • 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval
    • 1 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credit
    • 1 CE towards ACO CE requirements per Ch. 829 of the Texas Health and Safety Code by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS)
