    2020: When plans change.

As a year complete with an ongoing pandemic, political division and social tension around systemic racism comes to an end, now is the time for reflection. Navigating the chaos has changed how animal welfare is conducted. How does that impact our strategic plans and how can we use our learnings the most impactful way possible?

Join us as we sit down with three completely different organizations and ask them all the same thing: “What does strategic planning mean to you and why is it more important now than ever?”

    Moderator:
Bethany Heins, director, operations & strategic projects, national programs

    Panelists:
    • Becca Britton, executive director, Neighborhood Pets
    • Paula Powell, director, El Paso Animal Services

  • Webinar – 1/18/21 – The New Normal: Spay/Neuter by Five Months of Age – National Kitten Coalition

Webinar – 1/18/21 – The New Normal: Spay/Neuter by Five Months of Age – National Kitten Coalition

The National Kitten Coalition is excited to host Dr. Philip Bushby and Esther Mechler from the Feline Fix by Five program of Marian’s Dream to present on sterilizing kittens by five months of age.

There is confusion in the general public and private veterinary community about the optimum time to spay/neuter felines. For many, the recommended time has been six months of age. By that time a cat may be pregnant and shelters are overflowing. For that reason, Marian’s Dream embarked on a campaign to push the recommended age for felines back by four weeks. Dr. Bushby will present his findings on why the change is recommended, specific concerns that people have raised, and the research that supports the change.

Veterinarians often wait until cats are 6 months old before spay/neuter. The AVMA, AAHA, AAFP and the ASV disagree with waiting that long. The new normal is prior to 5 months of age. Several factors have led to this change:

    1. Mammary neoplasia is the 3rd most common cancer in cats and 85 to 90% of feline mammary tumors are malignant. Spay before 5 months of age significantly reduces mammary neoplasia.
    2. Spay/Neuter prior to 5 months of age reduces unplanned and unwanted litters of kittens.
    3. Castration prior to 5 months of age significantly reduces sexual behaviors which often cause relinquishment of cats to animal shelters.

It is safe to spay/neuter cats that young. Surgeries are easier, faster and safer. There are no adverse physiologic or orthopedic effects from spay/neuter prior to 5 months of age. Cats in shelters should be sterilized prior to adoption. Owned cats should be sterilized after the kitten vaccination series, but before 5 months of age.

Webinar – 12/10/20 – Recruiting the Next Generation to Your Agency – NACA/Justice Clearinghouse

How many of you have heard the words “well, we’ve always done it that way” as an excuse to not grow and change? As leaders, it is our responsibility to grow teams with unique points of view to gain fresh ideas and perspectives and ensure growth, change, and continued success in our organizations.  Many leaders, in our industry as well as others, tend to be a bit controlling, and since many of us have done just about every job in animal welfare, we may think we know how to do it all.  We aren’t wrong about knowing how to do it, but do we know how to do it best? This session is designed to discuss how leaders within animal welfare can approach recruitment, retention, and promotion to foster a diverse team of subject matter experts to help take their organization to the next level.

Other Webinars in this Series Include:

The National Animal Care & Control Association (NACA) was formed in 1978 for the express purpose of assisting its members to perform their duties in a professional manner. We believe only carefully selected and properly trained animal control personnel can correct community problems resulting from irresponsible animal ownership. NACA’s purpose is to preserve the Human/Animal Bond by insisting on responsible animal ownership.

CASCAR Zoom Call for California Shelters – 12/10/20 – SF SPCA Shelter PALS: Leveraging Your Medical Team – UC Davis KSMP

Are you fully leveraging your medical talent?

Calling all executive and medical directors!

This Thursday, Brandy Kuentzel and Bruce Wagman of SF SPCA Shelter PALS will be back at CASCAR discussing how to optimize your medical talent and the legalities of staff and volunteers performing specific medical tasks in your shelter.

    If you’ve ever wondered:

    • Can vaccines be administered during hold periods?
    • Do shelters need a premise permit?
    • What if we don’t have a veterinarian on site – can we use standing protocols?
    • Is microchipping or administering snap tests the practice of veterinary medicine?

This CASCAR meeting is for you!

In this one hour presentation, the PALS team will dive into why shelters are challenging the status quo, what we can and can’t do (yup, let’s talk about those premise permits), the tasks your key personnel are permitted to do and excluded from doing, and how you can use volunteer talent to support your medical team.

No Money? No Problem: Moving from Surrender to Support on Any Budget

A pet guardian shouldn’t have to choose between making rent or buying groceries and a trip to the vet for vaccinations or an overdue wellness exam, but this is exactly the choice too many face. A recent Access to Care Coalition Report coupled with American Veterinary Medical Association data revealed that 59 million pets live with guardians making under $20,000 a year, and one out of every four households has experienced a barrier to veterinary care in the last two years.

San Francisco SPCA Director of Community Medicine Jena Valdez, DVM, is working to narrow this gap with a community clinic model that provides preventative pet care to historically underserved neighborhoods in her city. In a new UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program webinar, Valdez shares the path to opening a reduced-cost walk-in preventative care clinic as part of the SF SPCA’s efforts to ensure all San Francisco pets and guardians have access to humane care by 2030.

Sustainable from year one, the SF SPCA Walk-in Wellness/Call-Ahead Clinic is an accessible and practical model for all shelters, regardless of their budget or access to eager donors. In fact, Valdez noted, the clinic ended up using exactly $0—zip!—of the $50,000 initially budgeted to get the project off the ground.

If you’re hoping to make a difference in access to care in your shelter or community—or if you just want to be inspired to dream big!—join us in celebrating the clinic’s first birthday and learn how to start and sustain your own community clinic. Discover how Valdez and staff made the case to SF SPCA senior leadership and board to open the clinic and how they’ve succeeded in making it sustainable, scalable, and valuable to pets and their people.
