8/6/20: Million Cat Challenge and Royal Canin Team Up to Launch Five-Part Webinar Series on Kitten Management

That’s why the Million Cat Challenge and Royal Canin have partnered up to bring shelters an all inclusive, tip-to-tail free webinar series that explores community-focused sheltering strategies that expand our kitten safety net.

Join experts as they dive into new and emerging kitten intake philosophies and discuss when kittens are best served outside shelters walls, streamlining your foster program, providing mom and kitten support, pediatric spay and neuter and successful adoption strategies that will send these tiny cats out the front door two by two.

Webinar – 8/20/20 – Training -v- Management with Suzanne Clothier (fee applies)

    Training vs. Management

For many of our clients, they unknowingly drift between training and management. Because they are not clear on the difference, they believe their dog has learned X, Y or Z when in reality, they have managed the dog’s behavior, not taught actual skills. This frustrates the handler and leads to misunderstandings.

Both management and training have their place in humane, effective training. Knowing the difference between the two modes of interacting with the dog is key to helping your clients set clear expectations in any training program.

    This webinar focuses on:

    • What is management?
    • Benefits & drawbacks of management
    • Does management always fail?
    • What is training?
    • Training vs prevention
    • The Think & Learn zone
    • Decision points: when to train, when to manage

Daily lives with our dogs are an ever changing blend of management and training, depending on the individual dog, our lifestyle, our skill level, expectations, and so many other factors. When a handler knows which mode they using at any given time, they can set realistic expectations for their dog’s behavior.

This video will be recorded in case you cannot attend live. 48 hours after the event, all who are registered will receive a link to the recording.

  • Webinar – 8/6/20 – Anatomy of Attention: When the VAN ran over DAN, and other tales with Suzanne Clothier (fee applies)

Webinar – 8/6/20 – Anatomy of Attention: When the VAN ran over DAN, and other tales with Suzanne Clothier (fee applies)

In the dog training community, a great deal of effort goes into teaching dogs “attention.” But what does that mean? Staring into the handler’s eyes? Moving in an abnormal position gazing at a toy? Ignoring all distractions? Maintaining focus? Working for hours on end? Be willing to eat all the chicken and cheese we dole out? Is a dog’s attention span based on his age, sex, or breed?

However we may define it, here’s the reality: We can get frustrated and confused when a dog doesn’t (can’t?) focus, or won’t give us his attention no matter how much we know or how good our timing may be. We’re smart trainers, so we know it’s not dominance or being stubborn or blowing us off but sometimes, we’re left scratching our own heads and asking, “What’s really going on in that dog’s head?”

Let’s take a deep dive into Attention, which is an awfully big, vague label for many complex interactions and networks in the mammalian brain. At any given moment, a dog’s brain (like yours!) is juggling:

    • different types of attention
    • alertness and arousal
    • sensory sensitivities and deficits
    • internal and external factors
    • focus and distractions
    • individual attention span

Understanding what’s at work in that canine brain (and your own, and your clients!) helps you make good choices for the dogs in our hands.

    We’ll look at:

    • the 4 main functions of conscious attention
    • cognitive resources
    • expending a limited commodity
    • how expectations and salience affect attention
    • what captures attention?
    • temperament and sensory awareness
    • to Carnegie Hall and beyond (the value of practice)

When you are clear what factors may be at work with any individual dog, it becomes easier to select appropriate techniques, use thinner slices, shift your expectations or simply help the handler see what the dog is saying and doing.

CEUs pending for IAABC and PPAB.

Webinar – 8/12/20 – How to Use the Found Animals system to Benefit Your Life-Saving Efforts – AmPa!

In this session, we will jump into a hands-on approach to using the Michelson Found Animals free registry to manage the animals you foster, or pull from local shelters. Shelter personnel that oversee rescue and foster networks will also benefit from this. This session will be in three parts:

    1. Explain and review microchips costs, why Found Animals is 100% free, and review our mission to be a partner in life-saving efforts.

    2. In this section, we will invite one person that oversees a rescue or a foster network that does NOT use Found Animals. I will do a quick interview and learn more about their mission, and walk them through how a free account with us can save time, effort, and money. We’ll walk through creating an account together, adding animals, and processing a transfer of ownership (adoption) over to another user. In short, this will be a practical exercise that everyone can follow along with and leave the webinar with a clear understanding of how Found Animals can help their organization, big or small.

    3. Q&A with the attendees. This is pretty self-explanatory and will add a huge amount of value as unique questions will likely come up. This will help others have some “Aha” moments and see how FA best fits into their program.
