    At the next installment of our Student Summer Lecture Series, Dr. Melissa Shapiro will present The Piglet Mindset: Inclusion and Education in Today’s Veterinary Profession on Wednesday, August 5, at 4 pm PT. (Professionals welcome, too!)
    Dr. Melissa Shapiro will share her story about her dog, Piglet, who was rescued from a hoarding situation. Due to irresponsible breeding, Piglet was born blind and deaf but thrives despite his disabilities. Dr. Shapiro and Piglet educate the public about the importance of spay/neuter and encourage adoption of special needs animals. Attendees will learn about the challenges of working with profoundly disabled dogs and how to educate clients about their needs.

    The process of learning is affected by many different factors, including the emotional state of the individual. By reading the body language of dogs, we can better understand their emotional state and their ability to respond to training exercises. This presentation will cover many of the body language signals that dogs are likely to show when stressed, fearful or anxious. Perhaps even more importantly, information will be included about how this emotional state directly impacts the process of learning and the effect on a plan or the animal’s response to specific exercises. Strategies such as making adjustments to reinforcement value, refining aspects of the stimulus gradient during desensitization and counterconditioning exercises, altering performance expectations, and setting realistic criteria for success will be covered.

    Course Description:
    How can I be running out of frequently dispensed items while paying extremely high inventory statements? Too little inventory and the practice is unable to meet the demands of clients and patients. Too much inventory ties up money with overstocked products and can reduce the practice’s cash flow. The system is broken, and it needs to be rebuilt. Throughout this course, you will be provided the absolute minimal foundation needed through each stage of developing an inventory system, and then more. The location of your practice, type of business, number of clients and client visits, the number of staff and total veterinarians, veterinary software or lack thereof, storage space, number practices the inventory system will be supporting and the resources you have easily accessible to use will all have some differences in managing your inventory, but, nevertheless, the principals and foundation are the same. At the end of the course you will be able to customize your inventory system to meet the needs of your practice. After all, one size does not fit all!

    Week 1 (Real Time Session August 10): The Human Side of Inventory Management
    Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:

    • Identify human characteristics for building the optimal inventory team.
    • Integrate inventory goals into job descriptions and training program.
    • Create a standard operating process for inventory.

    Week 2 (Real Time Session August 17): Inventory Systems – The Old, The New and Yours!
    Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:

    • Be able to conduct pre-inventory housekeeping.
    • Use veterinary software reports to measure cash flow of items.
    • Explore different types and combinations of inventory systems.

    Week 3 (Real Time Session August 24): Inventory Strategies – Protocols and Procedures
    Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:

    • Understand the ordering process.
    • Explain different pricing strategies.
    • Understand online pharmacy, mail order, third party distribution.

    Week 4 (Real Time Session August 31): Financial Tools, Law and Ethics
    Objectives: Upon completion of this session, the participant should be able to:

    • Understand and use financial indicators.
    • Understand and use calculations to manage inventory cash flow.
    • Discuss law and ethics related to inventory management.
    • Discuss law and ethics related to inventory management.

    Successful completion (scoring 80% or better) on the end-of-course test is required to earn a certificate of completion for the course.

    Julie Singer, LVT, CVPM is a 1979 graduate of Houston Community College Veterinary Technology Program, has attended Wharton County Junior College and Houston Community College business courses, and completed the Human Resource Program at Rice University. Julie is an editor and contributor to the Mosby Comprehensive Review for Veterinary Technicians textbook. Julie has lectured for Merck, Intervet, Shirt Sleeve Seminar Management Workshops and has lectured at Wild West Veterinary Conference, Seminars@ Sea, and AVMA Annual Convention and TVMA. She has taught continuing education for Veterinary Support Personnel Network since 2012. Julie is a board moderator for Veterinary Support Personnel Network, member of Veterinary Team Association of Texas, National Association of Veterinary Technicians, Texas Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Equine Veterinarians, Veterinary Hospital Managers Association, Certified Veterinary Practice Manager’s Association and Society for Human Resource Management. An LVT since 1979 and CVPM since 2001, she is a practice management consultant and currently manages a large AAHA practice.

    Join Ken Ramirez, KPCT’s Chief Training Officer, for a free hour-long virtual event live from The Ranch on Thursday, July 30 at 12:00 pm (PT). Ken will be joined by Laura Monaco Torelli for a return engagement to dive deeper into ways to prepare pets for success at the vet, behaviors to start training at home, and other ways to work cooperative care into your every day.
    KEN RAMIREZ

    Ken is the EVP and Chief Training Officer at Karen Pryor Clicker Training, co-leading the company with Aaron Clayton. Ken oversees the vision for, and development of, training education programs. You will usually find Ken teaching at a ClickerExpo conference, leading a course at the Karen Pryor National Training Center (The Ranch), or teaching one of the Karen Pryor Academy courses.

    A 40+ year veteran of animal care and training, Ken is a biologist and behaviorist who has supervised the development care and training of more than 40,000 species. He has worked with organizations across the globe to improve animal training, program effectiveness, and animal health and welfare. Ken’s diverse body of contributions includes designing and implementing conservation projects for elephant protection and spearheading projects to train everything from komodo dragons to butterflies. Ken’s extensive canine work includes working with trainers, organizations, and federal and state agencies on training procedures for topics including aggression, search-and-rescue, and scent detection.

    Ken has written/edited two successful books, taught at a major university, hosted two successful seasons of the television series Talk to the Animals, and was EVP of animal care and training at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium. When he’s not doing cool stuff with animals and people, you might find Ken at a NY theater or at any movie screening.

    LAURA MONACO TORELLI

    Laura Monaco Torelli is the founder of Animal Behavior Training Concepts in Chicago, Illinois. She began her career in 1991 at Chicago’s Shedd Aquarium, where she trained beluga whales, dolphins, sea otters, seals, river otters, and penguins. After nearly a decade at the Shedd, she moved on to the San Diego Zoo and then Brookfield Zoo as a lead supervisory trainer. During her time in the zoo community, Laura worked with a wide variety of terrestrial animals, including primates, large cats, birds of prey, horses, parrots, tree kangaroos, giraffes, red pandas, and dogs.

    Laura serves as a member of the Karen Pryor Academy for Animal Training & Behavior (KPA) Faculty, and as a Teaching Assistant for Dr. Susan G. Friedman’s Living & Learning with Animals online course. She offers private training at West Loop Veterinary Care, located in downtown Chicago. Laura has presented at numerous professional conferences and taught seminars across the United States, Italy, Sweden, UK, Singapore, Japan, and the Caribbean. She was an invited speaker for the American Veterinary Medical Association Convention, Midwest Veterinary Conference, and Penn Vet Working Dog Conference. She has appeared on various broadcast media, including WGN and NBC 5 news, WGN Radio, and WCIU’s You & Me This Morning. She also contributed her training videos for the Fear Free Professional Trainer Certification program, and the Karen Pryor Academy Better Vet Visits online course.
