  • Webinar – 5/27/20 – Keeping Families Together: Pivoting Community Programming to Support People and Pets During COVID-19 Sponsored by PetHub

Webinar – 5/27/20 – Keeping Families Together: Pivoting Community Programming to Support People and Pets During COVID-19 Sponsored by PetHub

Gateway Pet Guardians has spent years working with low income families in the Metro East St. Louis area, providing supplies and services to families with pets. Community programming has been put in place to help families access these resources, overcoming obstacles such as affordability and access. Now, more than ever, low income families in communities all over the United States can use the support of animal welfare organizations due to the rippling effects of COVID-19. As we wade through these uncharted waters, we must consider how to modify existing programming and create new programming to help families care for their pets despite recent economic impacts. This webinar will focus on ways rescues, shelters, and animal welfare agencies can provide support to families experiencing hardship, with the goal of keeping pets out of the shelter system and in their homes with families that love them.

Hosted by Jamie Case and Janet Alderson of Gateway Pet Guardians

  • Webinar – 5/19/20 – The Future of Animal Sheltering: Elements of the Animal Social Services Coalition Model – AmPA and Maddie’s Fund

Webinar – 5/19/20 – The Future of Animal Sheltering: Elements of the Animal Social Services Coalition Model – AmPA and Maddie’s Fund

The sheltering system as we know it was created more than 100 years ago and depended on addressing animal issues separately from human issues. Today, we are long overdue for a new approach that is in line with human social services and social justice movements and considers animals as part of family systems. Join the Executive Committee of the American Pets Alive! Animal Social Services Coalition to hear about how through collaboration with shelters around the country we plan to prototype an entirely new system to serve pets and people in our communities.

This webinar is presented by Dr. Ellen Jefferson (AmPA/APA), Kristen Hassen-Auerbach, Gina Knepp (Michelson Found Animals Foundation); Lisa Lafontaine (Humane Rescue Alliance); Bobby Mann (AmPA)

  • Webinar – 5/27/20 – Post-Pandemic Pets: Tips on Transitioning Companion Animals as Shelter-in-Place Orders are Lifted – HSVMA & Maddie’s Fund

Webinar – 5/27/20 – Post-Pandemic Pets: Tips on Transitioning Companion Animals as Shelter-in-Place Orders are Lifted – HSVMA & Maddie’s Fund

Many families stepped forward to foster or adopt new pets as COVID-19 spread across the US and animal shelters were forced to close their doors.  Many of these families, along with all families with pets, have now spent nearly two months continuously together with their animal companions and are preparing for the transition as they return to work, school and other activities.

Veterinary behaviorist Dr. Nicholas Dodman and veterinarian Dr. Susan Krebsbach will discuss tips for dealing with potential transitional challenges such as:

    • Separation anxiety
    • Puppy Socialization
    • Walking/feeding schedules

NOTE: There are no continuing education credits available for this webinar.

Although this webinar is free to all attendees, we encourage all veterinary professionals to  join HSVMA so you can take advantage of free access to our live and archived CE webinars and other member benefits.

HSVMA would like to give special thanks to our sponsor for this event.

  • Online Meeting – 5/15/20 – Covid-19 Shelter and Rescue Preparedness Summit – American Pets Alive!

Online Meeting – 5/15/20 – Covid-19 Shelter and Rescue Preparedness Summit – American Pets Alive!

As this global pandemic worsens, what will happen to homeless pets and those entering our shelters?
You’re invited to an online summit to work towards a preparedness plan we can all utilize.
We are creating communities who care, leaders who understand the importance of relationships between pets and people, and solutions to maintain lifesaving across the nation.
The AmPA! summit offers shelters and rescues a chance to join in breakout roundtables, work with experts, and engage with leaders from communities who have been hit the hardest by this disease.
You’ll hear from Dr. Ellen Jefferson and the instructors from Maddie’s Lifesaving Academy, as well as other industry leaders, and the communities who have been affected the most. But more importantly, you’ll be able to engage face to face (digitally!) with people like you. Because not feeling alone makes this crisis a lot easier.
    How it works:
We will start together and end together. You’ll engage in real-time conversations with other attendees from around the nation in small groups of 5-10 people, in addition to bigger group discussions. You can expect the conference to be 80% participation and 20% speakers.
    What you’ll take away:
    • Access to a community of people who are in the same situation as you
    • An understanding of how to prepare for the future
Bring your boss, your colleagues, and your direct reports as well. Great teams know how to be prepared.
