Webinar – 12/19/24 – Disasters: Incident Action Plan & Situation Status Report – CalAnimals

Does your agency use Incident Action Plans (IAP)? Not quite sure what an IAP is? Why is a situation status report (Sit Stat) so important? Find out in this training as our disaster response experts offer important guidance to prepare you for your next emergency.

Join Ryan Soulsby, CalAnimals Disaster Program Manager, and Brian Whipple, Sonoma County Animal Services, as they discuss the function of the Incident Action Plan and Situation Status Report and how it could benefit your disaster operations. The training will be a basic overview of each section of the documents, a discussion of who creates the documents and how the information is gathered, who and how the documents are disseminated, and leave the training with a basic editable template for your IAP and Sit Stat.

  • Online Event – 12/3/24 – All Call: Fighting Hunger with Pet Food Pantries and Community Collaboration – California for All Animals

Online Event – 12/3/24 – All Call: Fighting Hunger with Pet Food Pantries and Community Collaboration – California for All Animals

At 12 p.m. PT on December 3, join Jorge Delgado and Cel Jimenez from the Humane Society of Sonoma County for our last All Call of the year. They will discuss their Community Action Team initiatives, including how they sustain their pet food pantry, engage human services agencies, and more!

Pet food pantries are becoming part of animal shelter community programming to prevent animal surrenders and help people in need feed their pet companions. Although these pantries provide much-needed relief for the community, sustaining them long-term is challenging and stressful due to the lack of support from hunger relief organizations like food banks. It is time to raise awareness regarding pets’ food insecurity and advocate for our pet’s guardians in need. Please join us to discuss strategies to build a sustainable pet food pantry and how to create support among food banks and pet food pantries to fight hunger in our communities.

    About the All Call

The All Call is a twice-monthly, California community call for animal well-being professionals that occurs on the 1st and 3rd Tuesday. The one-hour call is a dedicated space to share and learn from each other. Popular topics include initiatives that create a more inclusive culture for both staff and community, programs that keep pets with their people, industry trends, research studies, as well as the hard stuff, like what’s not working or what is particularly difficult during times of scarcity. The call is a mix of presentations, storytelling, open discussion, and Q&A time.

The All Call is hosted by the California for All Animals team, Nadia Oseguera-Ramón, Ivy Ruiz, and Allison Cardona. You only need to register one time. Calls are sometimes recorded; recap emails with supplemental resources are sent post-call.

  • Webinar – 2/11/25 – When Cursing Isn’t Enough: Understanding Compassion Fatigue and Stress for Animal Welfare Professionals – NACA/Justice Clearinghouse

Webinar – 2/11/25 – When Cursing Isn’t Enough: Understanding Compassion Fatigue and Stress for Animal Welfare Professionals – NACA/Justice Clearinghouse

The emotional train ride affects animal care, animal control, animal welfare workers, and volunteers whether you’re in the field or in the shelter.  And sometimes, cursing just isn’t enough.

This webinar takes a direct look at the emotional and complex aspects of emotional fatigue and stress for animal care, control, and welfare workers and volunteers. It explores how the emotional impact directly affects us as well as how we can turn it into job satisfaction, thereby improving the lives of animals as well as ourselves. Learn how the joys and pains of the job often parallel each other.  We’ll also talk about simple ways to handle all of this stress, even if it includes a curse word or two.

This webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit. Please refer to your NACA membership portal for current CEU submission process. Current NACA Members who attend the live presentation or watch the recording will be able to download a jointly issued attendance certificate that includes the National Animal Care & Control Association logo. • Webinar – 12/12/24 – Maddie’s Insights: Insights and Implications from Housing-Related Animal Shelter Intake Data – Maddie’s Fund

Webinar – 12/12/24 – Maddie’s Insights: Insights and Implications from Housing-Related Animal Shelter Intake Data – Maddie’s Fund

Housing insecurity for tenants has increased in severity in the last several years as rents have skyrocketed and eviction rates have, in many cities, climbed higher than even pre-pandemic levels, according to a 2024 Harvard study. Today, more renters than ever are experiencing at least moderate rent burden as unaffordability in the rental market hit an all-time high in 2022. Housing insecurity directly impacts peoples’ ability to acquire and keep pets for life. There is a small, but growing body of research to better understand the impact of rental housing conditions on pets, pet owners, and animal shelters in the U.S. and how this issue relates to broader affordable housing and tenants’ rights social justice advocacy.

This presentation will share the results of three research projects, co-authored by our guest speaker Dr. Lauren Loney, a licensed attorney, researcher, and advocate crafting policies and lobbying on a variety of issues at local, state, and federal levels. Her talk will address the impact of restrictive pet policies in rental housing on pets, animal shelters, and the tenants who love them. Join us to learn about trends in pet relinquishment due to housing issues and several programmatic tools that may be most useful to mitigate the flow of these pets into animal shelters.

    Register here: https://maddies.fund/MIwebcastsRegister

Can’t attend live? Register anyway and you will get a link to the recording after the webcast. This webinar has been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. It has also been approved for 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize the Registry of Approved Continuing Education (RACE) approval.

    Key take-aways:

    • The audience will understand how animal welfare and pet policy issues intersect with traditional affordable housing and tenants’ rights issues, particularly for low-income families.
    • The audience will understand the difference between “pet-friendly” and “pet-inclusive” housing and why our affordable housing crisis, in general, means that policy advocacy for pet-inclusive housing include pushing back against the use of nonrefundable pet fees and rents.
    • The audience will learn about trends in pet relinquishment due to housing issues and several programmatic tools that may be most useful to mitigate the flow of these pets into animal shelters.
