    About José Ocaño:

José Ocaño has spent more than 15 years working to preserve and support the human-animal bond. Self-awareness, personal accountability, and relationship cultivation have been foundational as Jose navigates his career and life outside of work. At his first job with one of the largest animal shelters in the Arizona, Jose learned the importance of developing emotional intelligence, communication, and people skills to build meaningful relationships that inspire and motivate people to work better together. In 2017, after a decade of working to transform that organization, Jose joined Best Friends Animal Society, a national nonprofit organization where he served as the first Senior Director of People and Culture.

At Best Friends, Jose was responsible for leading dynamic teams, including Human Resources, Learning and Staff Development, Employee Experience, and Organizational Culture initiatives, and served as a strategic advisor to the Chief Executive Officer and Senior Leadership Team. Through collaboration, change, and innovative management, Jose and his team stewarded a workplace culture that was employee- and value-centric. These efforts positioned Best Friends to win multiple Top Workplace Awards since 2020.

In 2023, Jose launched Hatching, a company centered around helping people #LiveBetter and #WorkBetter. Hatching’s vision is to create a more peaceful world by helping people live with more compassion, gratitude, and self-worth.  The goal of Hatching is to help people and organizations leverage their unique experiences and potential to make the workplace an environment where people can thrive. Jose believes that, together, we will make the world a better place by leading with intention, authenticity, and personal accountability.

  • Webinar – 9/28/23 – “What to Expect During Those Golden Years” with Dr. Lena Provoost – ACVB (fee applies)

Webinar – 9/28/23 – “What to Expect During Those Golden Years” with Dr. Lena Provoost – ACVB (fee applies)

What to expect during those golden years – a focus on cognitive health and dysfunction in the senior dog and cat

Time waits for no one and as any individual ages, the body and mind undergoes degeneration. During this webinar we will explore the most reported health changes that occur in our aging pets from a medical and cognitive aspect. A review of the neurophysiological causes of cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) will be reviewed and considerations for treatment and prevention. The aim is to help caretakers anticipate and care for the health of senior pets and identify clinical signs of CDS.

Dr. Lena Provoost currently works at Penn Vet in Philadelphia, PA as a clinician and lecturer in Small Animal Behavior & Welfare. She enjoys educating students, her clients, and treating companion animals afflicted with anxieties, fears, and frustrations. Her major interests include all aspects of cognition, effects and management of pain on behavior, behavioral genetics, and the human animal bond. Dr. Provoost admits that most of her spare time is spent running after her two young sons, but enjoys every minute of it.

  • Webinar – 9/21/23 – Threshold: Is It What You Think It Is? – FDSA (fee applies)

Webinar – 9/21/23 – Threshold: Is It What You Think It Is? – FDSA (fee applies)

We all say things like “my dog is over threshold” or “keep him under threshold,” but do you really know what that means? We all know that being under threshold is best if we want stress reduction and good learning to take place, yet everyone has a different definition of threshold for their dog.

Do you want your dog to feel better emotionally and be in a good learning space mentally? Come examine the idea of threshold, how you can best determine it for your dog, and how getting it right can really accelerate the reduction of stress in your dog!

    Presenter: Amy Cook, PhD

Note: This webinar is back by popular demand! Since it last ran in 2018, it will be re-recorded and updated for this event! However, you may wish to check your webinar library before purchasing.

  • National Shelter Medicine Rounds – 9/12/23 – Can heartworm treatment be faster, cheaper and more accessible—and still safe and effective? – University of Wisconsin Shelter Medicine Program

National Shelter Medicine Rounds – 9/12/23 – Can heartworm treatment be faster, cheaper and more accessible—and still safe and effective? – University of Wisconsin Shelter Medicine Program

The University of Wisconsin Shelter Medicine Program is thrilled to announce the next installment of National Shelter Medicine Rounds!

National Rounds is a platform for discussion of current topics relevant to shelter medicine for continued learning and collaboration.  While primarily intended or shelter veterinarians, others interested in shelter medicine are welcome to join; we believe everyone will take something away from these calls!  The next national rounds call will take place Tuesday, September 12th from 2:30 to 3: 30 Central Time.

The topic of presentation and discussion this week will be “Can heartworm treatment be faster, cheaper and more accessible – and still safe and effective? (Yes. With caveats.)” by our lovely guest speakers, Dr. Linda Jacobson and Dr. Karen Ward.

Some veterinarians adhere closely to the American Heartworm Society Guidelines, while many (maybe most?) use their favourite short-cuts and modifications. This talk is an evidence-based discussion of what modifications can and can’t be justified, and where established orthodoxy and traditional approaches do and don’t make sense. It centers around the two talks we presented at the AHS Symposium in 2022 – one on our shorter, less expensive 3-dose melarsomine study, the other about an accessible alternative to melarsomine (moxi-doxy or “slow kill”). We’ll also challenge the audience to think about universal testing and the necessity of testing before prescribing preventives, treating heartworm in shelters, and more.

We hope to have an open discussion, so come with questions and feel free to unmute to participate!  Our hope is to create a space that feels safe for all participants; we ask you to follow these Accountable Space guidelines. The presentation portion of National Rounds will be recorded, but the discussion and Q & A sessions will not.

If you or someone you know would like to be added to the national rounds email list,  please send your request to nationalsheltermedicinerounds@vetmed.wisc.edu.

Grant Opportunity – 9/15/23 to 9/29/23 – More Pets and People Together Grant Period – California for All Animals

The UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program (KSMP) is announcing requests for proposals for the California for All Animals (C4AA) Program. We are excited to partner with you to make an impact on animal shelters and communities in California.

The More Pets and People Together Grants application period will be open to eligible organizations in California for 15 days beginning on Friday, September 15, 2023 at 7:00am PDT and ending on Friday, September 29, 2023 at 7:00pm PDT.

This grant cycle will focus on removing barriers in four focus areas:

    • Adoptions
    • Foster programming
    • Return to home/community/field
    • Intake prevention services

We welcome innovation outside these focus areas in an outcomes process not listed above.

We recognize that sustainable change takes place over extended periods of time, and we encourage organizations to use this funding opportunity to commit to any of the following incremental changes aimed at dismantling barriers and building bridges within the community. Each organization’s unique circumstances (whether it be budget, staff capacity, or general community resources) will dictate their approach.
