  • Webinar – 9/12/23 – Preserving the Human-Animal Bond: A holistic approach to fear, anxiety, and stress – Fear Free

Webinar – 9/12/23 – Preserving the Human-Animal Bond: A holistic approach to fear, anxiety, and stress – Fear Free

The human-animal bond between a pet and their caregivers, including the veterinary professional team, is vital to the safety and well-being of the pet. Join us as we discuss the science and history of the human-animal bond, a holistic view of various sources of stress that a pet may experience at home, and how to discuss and educate pet owners on identifying and reducing their pet’s fear, anxiety, and stress.

In this webinar, you will learn how to:

    • Identify potential sources of fear, anxiety, and stress (FAS) in different aspects of a pet’s life
    • Evaluate the pet’s life holistically and proactively mitigate FAS that erodes the human-animal bond
    • Develop creative solutions to strengthen the human-animal bond in situations that may produce FAS

  • Webinar – 9/21/23 – Animal Shelter Safety: Proven Strategies to Reduce Serious Bites and Other Risks -CalAnimals

Webinar – 9/21/23 – Animal Shelter Safety: Proven Strategies to Reduce Serious Bites and Other Risks -CalAnimals

When shelters are full, they’re at higher risk of safety-related incidents including falls, serious bites, and dog-to-dog altercations. Shelters often respond to safety incidents by increasing euthanasia, restricting animal movement, or introducing reactive rules and policies. Unfortunately, these measures do not address the underlying problems causing safety incidents, so they’re unlikely to be effective over the medium and long term.

The good news is there are lots of proactive steps animal shelters can take to improve safety and reduce risk. In this session, we’ll use real-life examples of dog bites, injuries, and other safety incidents to explore the roots of what went wrong and what corrective actions will help. We’ll specifically cover:

    • The role of shelter rounds in maintaining and improving shelter safety
    • Kennel safety/fight interruption equipment and maintenance
    • Kennel enrichment to improve safety
    • Quick and easy safety training for staff and volunteers
    • Pre-contact disclosure protocol for staff and volunteers
    • Locks vs. carabiners: which one is actually safer?
    • The risks and benefits of cohousing dogs

This session is fast-paced and interactive and will leave attendees feeling empowered to create a culture of safety in their organization.

Online Event – 10/9/23 to 10/13/23 – Big Hairy People and Pets Summit & Workshops – Getting2Zero (fee applies)

AIAMG2Z and AMRRIC invite you to participate in the Big Hairy People and Pets Summit & Workshops.

The three most active and influential organisations working at the intersection of community health and safety and companion animal welfare and management in Australia are combining forces to deliver a never seen before event. This conference and workshops will be a celebration of collaboration, reconnection, and knowledge sharing and builds on the work of the organisations convening the event.

The theme for this year’s conference is Breaking Down Barriers.

In 2023 we will focus on the programs, practices and strategies that involve and engage the community in managing their pets. We will be looking at the role that organisations play in providing support to both companion animals and the people who care for them.

What are the barriers to positive results in the work that is undertaken? What can be done to reduce or remove those barriers? How can we engage the broader community with companion animal management and the problems that face the sector and those that work in the space? How can the issue of companion animal management and sheltering be looked at from a broader, social, ethical and One Health perspective? How can we empower pet lovers, owners, carers and those without pets to be a part of the solutions?

These, and many more questions relating to social change, community safety and welfare, animal management and welfare, emergency management and responsible pet ownership will be discussed at this event.

Attend sessions incorporating practical training delivered by experts in the field. Industry and sector leaders from Australia and overseas will lead sessions to explore innovative solutions to guide Australia’s approach to the management of companion animals now and into the future while providing insights on how the challenges are being met elsewhere.

Attendance at this conference is essential for everyone involved in companion animal and community health and safety policy and practice, including those working in all levels of government, the not-for-profit welfare, shelter and rescue sector, the research, academic and veterinary professions, and the pet industry.

  • Online Course – 9/16/23 – Return-to-Field: How Shelters Save Community Cats – Community Cats Podcast

Online Course – 9/16/23 – Return-to-Field: How Shelters Save Community Cats – Community Cats Podcast

Presented by Neighborhood Cats. It used to be that a feral cat had little chance of exiting a shelter alive after he entered.  But that’s no longer the case.  In recent years, more and more shelters have adopted Return-to-Field (RTF) programs.  Instead of euthanizing healthy community cats (whether feral, friendly or otherwise), the shelter will spay or neuter, eartip and vaccinate, then return the cat back to where he was found. We’ll cover the policies behind RTF, the mechanics of implementing the program, current controversies over the RTF of friendly cats, and how to combine RTF with TNR in general to lower cat populations and create sustainability.
