Online Course – Starts 2/15/23 – What Is a Dog? The Ethology of Our Best Friend – IAABC (fee applies)

Ethology is the scientific and objective study of animal behavior under natural conditions. In short, it’s the study of how animals behave in the real world.

This course takes a deep dive into our understanding of dogs as a species, and therefore how we live with them and train them, how they learn, and how we can best solve behavioral issues if they arise.

To address these questions we will consider:

    • The interplay between canine domestication, evolution, and behavior
    • Development in dogs: birth through adulthood
    • The perceptual world of the dog and how it impacts behavior
    • How dogs approach and solve problems in their environment
    • The role of genetics in behavior
    • The behavior of free-ranging dogs

You will come away from this course with an even deeper appreciation and wonder for these amazing animals we live with. You’ll never look at dogs—or dog training—quite the same way again.

    Course Begins: February 15, 2023

    FUNDAMENTALS OF ETHOLOGY

Think outside the Skinner box! Ethology is the scientific and objective study of how animals behave in the real world. This course will teach you the core concepts of ethology — how animals see their world, and why they behave the way they do.

You’ll learn how the environment, individual personality, and genetics all interact. This course is great for anyone new to ethology, working or interested in sheltering, zoos, training, and behavior, and everyone interested in getting the most out of their relationship with a companion animal, personal or professional.

Ethology is the study of animal behavior and its evolution, and is a key factor in having true expertise in the understanding of animals.

    • How do animals see and interact with their world?
    • What does this mean in terms of how they behave?
    • How will this change and enhance your understanding of behavior?
    • How can this understanding dramatically improve your ability to work with, and help animals?
    • An understanding of ethology, and the exploration of these questions will forever change how you think about the animals we live and work with.

  • Webinar – 12/7/22 – Preventing Bites in the Veterinary Hospital. – PPG (fee applies)

Webinar – 12/7/22 – Preventing Bites in the Veterinary Hospital. – PPG (fee applies)

Bites can be prevented in the hospital environment when staff is trained properly in understanding body language and when they understand force free, positive techniques. Keeping our patients under threshold while in the hospital is critical and learning alternate ways to handle a fearful animal is needed to keep the staff safe.

    Learning Objectives:

    • How the understanding of body language staff can prevent bites
    • The ability to share tips with staff and others about how to help prevent bites
    • Understanding of why and how some medications can help prevent bites and how they can not only help the staff, but can help the patients too.

  • Webinar – 12/1/22 – Toward a New Understanding of the Constructional Aggression Treatment – FDSA (fee applies)

Webinar – 12/1/22 – Toward a New Understanding of the Constructional Aggression Treatment – FDSA (fee applies)

Since I released CAT in 2006 with Dr. Jesus Rosales-Ruiz, there have been some modifications to increase its effectiveness, and indeed, its palatability to trainers. As I have been known to say, Science-Based training is not about finding the One Big Eternal Truth to worship. It’s about continued exploration and experimentation, and changing your behavior based on your (and others’) discoveries.

This presentation will be an overview of the Constructional Aggression Treatment (CAT) with an emphasis on how it has been improved. I’ll go over what the Constructional Approach is, the importance of environment, and, importantly, adding the term “Alert” to our aggression vocabulary.
