A law enforcement officer seizes a dying horse without a warrant. An abused animal is brought to a veterinarian for euthanasia and cremation, but instead is necropsied. A law enforcement officer shields onlooking children from a cat’s body by placing it in a nearby dumpster. A veterinarian does a warrantless blood draw to diagnose a malnourished dog, and the blood results are used in a criminal prosecution. In animal cruelty cases, the animal’s body—whether dead or alive—is a crime scene. Many law enforcement professionals have not been trained to properly preserve and search that crime scene, and yet they are forced to do so, without compromising the evidence, the defendant’s constitutional rights, or the animal’s health or life. These cases present novel search and seizure issues. Join the Animal Legal Defense Fund’s attorneys David Rosengard, Emily Lewis, and Kathleen Wood to discuss how these and other issues can be resolved for a successful prosecution, and how they can be addressed or avoided in future cases.

How Your Team Can Tap into the Power of Yes to Send More Animals Home
If you’ve tried everything you can think of to connect with your community, reduced barriers to fostering and adoption, and still animals are sitting in your shelter, you may catch yourself feeling powerless to increase positive outcomes, but you do have the opportunity to make a difference, and it starts with one simple word: Yes! Yes to going further to simplify your adoption process; yes to partnering with the community and engaging in deep listening; and yes to mitigating bias and working to make your communications and materials more inclusive, welcoming, and accessible.
In last week’s Maddie’s Million Pet Challenge webinar, The Power of Yes, California for All Animals State Director Allison Cardona invited us to dig into what might be keeping people who want to foster or adopt from coming to the shelter, and she outlined how we can use these three impactful and untapped practices to encourage engagement across our communities and send more animals home. If you missed this thought-provoking, tip-filled webinar, you can catch the recording here and continue the conversation at Maddie’s Pet Form.
Want to engage more deeply with your staff and start a discussion around how you can lean into the power of these practices at your shelter? Enroll as a team in the short, self-paced online training module (SPOT mod) The Power of Yes! Removing Barriers to Adoption in the Maddie’s Million Pet Challenge Learniverse. While 70% of US households have a pet, only a fraction of those animals are adopted from animal shelters. This new course looks at barriers that typically push potential adopters away from animal shelters and towards other options. In addition to examining adoption barriers and the misconceptions that help them persist, you’ll look at strategies that can lower these hurdles, help more animals reach a live outcome and a happy life, and help your shelter embrace and welcome all members of your community.
The webinar recording has been pre-approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by the National Animal Care & Control Association. The self-paced course has been approved for 1.0 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator (CAWA) continuing education credits by The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement and by National Animal Care and Control Association and for 1 hour of continuing education credit until November 7, 2024 in jurisdictions that recognize RACE approval.

Online Event – 11/7/22 – Pro-Partnership: Panel discussion around acknowledging current harms and moving forward in solidarity. – CARE
Earlier this month, a recording of a Los Angeles City Council meeting was published by the LA Times. In it, three City Council members and the president of a labor union, are heard using racist and homophobic terms to describe constituents and fellow city council members. The recordings caused a national uproar, resulting in the resignation of Nury Martinez, LA City Council president and Ron Herrera, LA County Federation of Labor president. Discuss the anti-black, indigenous and the LGBTQ+ comments made by Nury Martinez for CARE.
How do we talk about and address anti Blackness and anti-Indigeneity as Black Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC)? How do we acknowledge the harms and current reality to move forward in solidarity? To understand the issues and grapple with these questions, we have invited a group of panelists to discuss.
Panel:
1. Alina Luna
2. DDm
3. Miguel Ruelas
4. Jolene JonesModerator: Allison Cardona

Webinar – 11/10/22 – Train This Now! The Short List for your New Puppy – FDSA (fee applies)
Five core concepts that a baby can learn. Each one offers several tangents of training that will expand your puppy’s readiness for the world.
We used to train all the things as young as possible, and puppies were often overwhelmed. Nowadays we tend to train very little while we let the relationship take shape. Our babies are learning at a phenomenal rate whether we like it or not, so it’s important to teach them some things and it’s important to choose wisely! What to train when? Which things can wait a little longer and which things are best to teach while your puppy is very young?
Each of these five lessons can be built over the next few weeks and you can build the more advanced elements over the next few months. You and your puppy will benefit immediately when you get started. Life skills and convenience, confidence, manners and learning to learn. This is a core group of compatible concepts that even a baby can master. You and your puppy will love the fun and games approach, and you’ll enjoy a lifetime benefit from starting young.
Note: This webinar is back by popular demand. Please check your webinar library before purchasing to avoid duplicate purchases.
