  • Webinar – 9/15/22 – Emotion Driven Behaviors – Working with Skittish Dogs – GoodPup

Webinar – 9/15/22 – Emotion Driven Behaviors – Working with Skittish Dogs – GoodPup

This is the first webinar in our Fall Series on Emotion Drive Behaviors. In this webinar, we will discuss working with skittish dogs.

A variety of challenging behaviors stem from the emotions our dogs experience as they maneuver through the stressful situations of life.

GoodPup’s new webinar series on emotion based behaviors will focus on how emotions influence the concerning behaviors we see.

Beginning with shy or skittish dogs, every webinar in this series will focus on how to start changing these behaviors by first understanding how to address the emotion behind them.

GoodPup will break down the management required to prevent or stop the stress; talk about how to improve communication; and look at how to begin to change the underlying emotion, ultimately changing the behavior.

    Presenter:

Kait Hembree VTS (Behavior), CVT, KPA CTP
    Head of Training at GoodPup

Kait Hembree and her team designed the GoodPup Training Program using the latest scientific research and positive reinforcement training techniques. Kait’s career in Animal Behavior spans decades. She has extensive experience working with behavior modification both in and outside veterinary practices and animal shelters. She regularly consults as a dog behavior expert across the country.

  • Grant Opportunity – 9/15/22 to 10/15/22 – Sniptember Spay/Neuter Grants – California for All Animals

Grant Opportunity – 9/15/22 to 10/15/22 – Sniptember Spay/Neuter Grants – California for All Animals

Let’s grow our spay/neuter capacity together, California!

We’re doubling down on our commitment to help you provide the care and services that strengthen the bonds and remove the barriers between pets in your community and the people who care for them with Sniptember, a 30-day spay/neuter grant blitz to continue the effort to build back our surgery capacity and relieve the bottlenecks that are keeping animals in our shelters for too long.

Municipal animal shelters, private animal shelters with municipal contracts, and private shelters are eligible to respond to this RFP, even if they already received a California for All Animals grant this year. We know you have work to do so we’ve kept the application process simple: Submit your one-page proposal, budget, and estimated impact statement.

Veterinary clinics and spay/neuter organizations without a brick and mortar intake facility are encouraged to partner with animal shelters on proposals. The shelter would act as the recipient of the funding and then contract with the spay/neuter organization for services. If you need help partnering with a shelter(s) in your region, reach out to us at grants@californiaforallanimals.com and we’ll connect you.

The funding priority for this grant cycle is to increase capacity for spay/neuter services for animal shelters, which is defined as spay/neuter of animals in the shelter, referred by field services and those at risk of ending up in the shelter, for example pet owners experiencing homelessness, pet owners residing in zip codes of high intake, and priority community animals. Operational costs associated with increasing capacity should be included in the proposal.

RFPs will be accepted from September 15 – October 15, 2022. Applicants will be notified via email by November 15, 2022. For more information visit California for All Animals.

  • Online Course – 9/15/22 – Breaking Happy: A Sustainable Path to Well-Being – The AAWA (fee applies)

Online Course – 9/15/22 – Breaking Happy: A Sustainable Path to Well-Being – The AAWA (fee applies)

Can we be happy all the time?  Should we be?

Psychologically and physiologically, we can’t be happy all the time — our brains aren’t built that way. And the desire to buck that nature is harming us in immense ways. There’s a healthier way to be, where we replace the pursuit of happiness with the pursuit of well-being.

This three-hour live, interactive session presented by Josh Vaisman will introduce participants to positive psychology, the scientific study of human flourishing.  We’ll explore the challenges of the “Cult of Happiness” and lay out an evidence-based approach for a more nuanced, psychologically healthier path to well-being.

Attendees will leave inspired and equipped to cultivate their own well-being as animal welfare professionals and leaders. Learn how to:

    • Understand the cult of happiness and the destination dilemma
    • Recognize why feeling bad is often normal… and healthy!
    • Explore a variety of evidence-based practices we can use to build a resilient, sustainable mindset for ourselves and our team

This course is approved for 3 hours of CEs for both CAWA and NACA.

Watch this invitation from Josh Vaisman.

This live course is limited to 50 participants. Once the course is full we will open a waitlist.

  • Webinar – 10/13/22 – “I really don’t want to get bit today”: Strategies for fractious patients with Dr. Marie Hopfensperger – ACVB (fee applies)

Webinar – 10/13/22 – “I really don’t want to get bit today”: Strategies for fractious patients with Dr. Marie Hopfensperger – ACVB (fee applies)

Most patients who demonstrate aggression in the veterinary setting do so out of fear. However, these fearful and fractious patients pose a real risk to veterinary team members. These cases can also be stressful and time-consuming. This talk will focus on practical strategies and sedation plans to enhance safety and reduce stress for all parties involved.

Marie Hopfensperger, DVM, DACVB is one of four board-certified veterinary behaviorists in the state of Michigan. She is an assistant professor at Michigan State University, where she runs the Behavioral Health & Wellness service. Her areas of clinical expertise include sedation of fearful and fractious companion animals, behavioral pharmacology, canine and feline aggression, and feline inappropriate elimination. Her current research is related to shelter dogs, specifically the assessment of their behavioral health and pharmacologic interventions to support their welfare while in the shelter, as well as evaluation of their behavior in the adoptive home environment. Dr. Hopfensperger was the first veterinarian ever to be selected as Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Fellow. Her focus during this fellowship was on developing a trauma-informed One Welfare model of animal-assisted therapy, such that programming is beneficial for both human and animal participants. She is a passionate advocate for veterinary student wellbeing and is humbled to have received two teaching awards in 2021.

Webinar – 9/7/22 – 3 Steps to Build a Wildly Engaged Community – Network for Good

Make your nonprofit more than a mission, make it a movement.

Community organizing is our nonprofit superpower. When we galvanize our people into a movement of engaged advocates – demanding change for the communities and causes they care about – everything else gets easier… fundraising, board leadership, strategic partnerships, and capacity building.

By investing in your mission, donors and partners are rooting for you to be their ‘representative’ and leverage their collective voice and influence for big impact.

In this session, we’ll explore key strategies to galvanize a more inclusive, diverse, and fired-up coalition of change makers ready to make the bold moves needed to fast track your big vision – no matter how many database contacts you currently have.

Participants will explore key steps to:

    1. Hone your magnetic message to attract the right donors and partners who are ready to give
    2. Simplify and target your fundraising efforts to raise more money with less struggle
