  • Webinar – 8/9/22 – Building a Positive Workplace Culture—Why It Matters and How to Do It – HASS

Webinar – 8/9/22 – Building a Positive Workplace Culture—Why It Matters and How to Do It – HASS

The animal welfare industry is understaffed and facing worker turnover, like employers around the country. The effects are dire: animal shelter workers are burned out, and animals’ lives are at risk. But in the face of these challenges, Pasco County Animal Services (PCAS) in Florida has zero vacant positions, and hasn’t had an opening in an entry level position in over 14 months.

PCAS Assistant Director Spencer Conover attributes this success to a positive workplace culture, built through inspiration, leadership, recognition, equal pay, and training. In this webinar,  Conover will discuss how PCAS created and sustains its positive workplace culture, and how you can easily adapt these methods to your workplace to help better retain team members and build a positive workplace culture of your own.

Join us Tuesday, August 9 at 5pm CT for an exciting webinar, Building a Positive Workplace Culture – Why It Matters and How to Do It, hosted by Spencer Conover, Assistant Director of Pasco County Animal Services.

When it comes to daily shelter activities that happen on a regular basis, the most common questions, and greatest confusion, revolve around intake (if, when, who) of animals, and the applicable holding periods once intake occurs. This webinar will lay out the basics for intake and holding periods under California law, explain the interactions of these issues with other laws, and explore some of the gray areas and public policy behind it all.

  • Online Event – 7/25/22 to 8/1/22 – Return to Home Challenge Registration Period – Maddie’s Fund

Online Event – 7/25/22 to 8/1/22 – Return to Home Challenge Registration Period – Maddie’s Fund

At its core, the Return to Home Challenge is simple. Find a pet? Get it home. That home might be a cozy apartment, a house with a big yard or, if you’re a community cat, an abandoned lot.

For the month of October, 17 national organizations are inviting animal shelters and rescue organizations who handle lost/stray/at-large dogs and cats to elevate Return to Home (RTH) by creating a culture of return to home within their organization and community. In just 31 days, your organization can create or expand inclusive and diverse new programs or practices to make it easier for your community to help a lost pet or find a pet they have lost, and ultimately keep families together. Simple practices like microchipping, making information about lost pets easily accessible on your website and letting the community know what they should do if they find a cat can go a long way in keeping pets out of the shelter and getting them back into their homes.

Along with saving time, resources and shelter space to help those pets who really need it, you’ll have a chance at the $300,000 in grant prizes, thanks to Maddie’s Fund, Michelson Found Animals Foundation and Petco Love.

As with the previous Challenges, there will be plenty of help along the way. Resources from town halls, standard operating protocols, partnering with local businesses, creating flyers, photography tips and website best practices will be available. Additionally, four Zoom Huddles will be held with a diverse line-up of RTH experts. These Zoom events will bring you together with your peers who are successfully implementing RTH practices to share how they do it.

Note: This year we’ve expanded Return to Home to include the Return to Field/Shelter-neuter release (RTF/SNR) category in addition to the Return to Owner category on the Basic Data Matrix. Traditional trap-neuter-return, while invaluable to your community, is not included in this Challenge.

So, what do you say? Are you in? We hope so!

  • Webinar – 7/27/22 – Bio Writing to Build Connection – HeARTs Speak

Webinar – 7/27/22 – Bio Writing to Build Connection – HeARTs Speak

If photos and video open the door, then the descriptions and bios that we write for pets are what tend to seal the deal. Pet bios take many forms – most often as social media captions/descriptions or writeups on adoption sites. No matter where these will be seen, they become an important part of getting potential pet owners to take action and investigate adoption. This presentation will delve into how to use bios to help communicate effectively while also catching attention for long-stay or overlooked pets.

    Topics covered include:
-How to use photo + video to maximize impact
-The importance of transparency and honesty in communications
-Strategies and activities to break through bio-writing boredom
-Avoiding the trap of stereotyping and proactively fighting misinformation
-How to shine extra light on long-stay pets

Presenter: Caitlin Quinn, Director of Operations at HeARTs Speak
Caitlin is passionate about working with shelters and rescues to reimagine the way they tell their stories and connect with new audiences. She has served in the animal welfare field since 2008 and early on had the honor of working closely with diverse organizations across the U.S. to maximize resources, redesign policies, & find life-changing marketing solutions. In 2015 she got her MPA with a concentration in nonprofit management and in 2021 she began teaching shelter marketing for the University of Florida Master’s in Shelter Medicine program. She currently shares her life with a petite brindle pit bull named Sally.

  • Buying Group Offers Discounted Veterinary Supplies to Shelters and Rescues

Buying Group Offers Discounted Veterinary Supplies to Shelters and Rescues

A new program introduced by the San Francisco SPCA aims to lower the costs of veterinary supplies and other goods for participating animal welfare organizations. The Compassion Collective Purchasing Program is free to join and does not require administrative fees; in order to remain active members of the program, organizations would only need to make purchases at least once every 3 months.

“By creating a buying group, we increase our purchasing power with the aim to qualify shelters and rescues for discounts that may otherwise be out of reach for a single entity,” says Jennifer Scarlett, DVM.

Interested organizations across the country are invited to join the program, which partners with Covetrus to provide discounts on products like flea/tick preventatives, veterinary supplies, medical supplies, and equipment.

To join or learn more, visit https://www.sfspca.org/compassion-collective/ or contact SF SPCA Supply Chain Director Donna Shiono at dshiono@sfspca.org. Existing Covetrus customers will have the new discount added to their account.
