Online Event – 8/24/21 – Maddie’s Candid Conversation with Dr. Lila Miller – Maddie’s Fund

This Maddie’s Candid Conversation is an open, informal 60-minute conversation and Q+A with Dr. Lila Miller, DVM,  a groundbreaking and trailblazing visionary!

In 1977, Dr. Lila Miller was one of the first two African American women to ever graduate from Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. In a career spanning 42 years, Dr. Miller transformed the lives of countless pets, developing the first veterinarian-written guidelines for shelter animal care, which are now used in shelters across the country to ensure the humane treatment of shelter pets. Throughout, she’s educated a generation of students about issues shelters face and has paved the way for women of color in veterinary medicine.

As the recipient of the 2021 Avanzino Leadership Award for her bold ideas and innovative work in the field of veterinary shelter medicine, it is no wonder she is the mother of shelter medicine. A proclamation of Dr. Lila Miller Shelter Medicine Day was declared for July 10, 2021. Recognition of Dr. Miller, this day and the Avanzino Leadership Award was received from U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer, U.S. Representative Tom Reed, New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, New York State Assemblywoman Deborah Glick, New York City Mayor’s office, City of Ithaca Mayor Svante Myrick, and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer.

This is one you won’t want to miss!

Use this discussion thread to ask any questions to Dr. Lila Miller. This thread will also be updated with the recording after the live event. Hope to see you there!

Webinar – 8/31/21 – What Home Means for Cats: Working Together to Keep More Cats Alive and Thriving – HASS

But, what does return to home mean when it comes to cats that live indoors and out? When it comes to talking about cats, we use a lot of acronyms: RTF, RTH, TNR, and SNR. But, the only term we really need is Return to Home. Join Dr. Kate Hurley and Monica Frenden for this live webinar to answer this question and more! Cat fanatics and experts discuss why it is best to return ALL cats to their homes (even the friendly ones!), how to educate communities and get them on-board, and why indiscriminate impoundment of cats is harmful to marginalized communities.

CASCAR Zoom Call for California Shelters – 7/27/21 – All-Star Community Cat Panel – CASCAR – UC Davis KSMP

The cats have commandeered the mic again!

We know you’re up to your ears in cats and the need for feline-focused management solutions is intense right now. Last month the Million Cat Challenge hosted a webinar, The Top Ten: Questions and Controversy with Community Cat Programs, to address your biggest CCP programming and messaging battles. It was a great presentation by three feline heavyweights—Maddie’s Director of Feline Lifesaving Monica Frenden, HSUS Senior Analyst for Cat Protection & Policy Danielle Bays, and Stray Cat Alliance Executive Director Christi Metropol—that dove right into all the hot topics. In one short hour, they covered everything from the “why” behind community cat programming to “how” to have the friendly vs. feral conversation with your community, and why we should move away from calling community cat programming by different names (i.e. TNR, RTF, SNR). Our time flew by so quickly there were still questions rolling in when the curtains dropped.

Thankfully, the all-star panel has agreed to visit CASCAR for an aftershow, this time joined by Shelter PALS founder and attorney Brandy Kuentzel to answer your California-specific lingering legal questions. We won’t have time to go through the entire presentation again, so definitely check it out before CASCAR if you haven’t already so we can dive right into the conversation and maximize our time with this great panel. Bring your staff, your questions, and your concerns—this is your chance to streamline your cat intake protocols and messaging!

Webinar – 9/2/21 – Risk Assessment of Aggression Cases with Dr. Christopher Pachel – Dog iBox (fee applies)

Veterinarians and behavior professionals are frequently faced with questions about aggressive behaviors that may include biting, scratching, lunging, or threatening postures. As with other behavioral questions, it is rare for there to be a single “right” answer to a question, or a “one size fits all” solution to the problem that is occurring. This presentation will discuss risk factors that affect the likelihood of achieving a safe and successful outcome for these patients. Strategies for approaching topics such as rehoming or humane euthanasia will also be covered.
