Webinar – 5/27/21 – Pet Stores, Puppy Mills and Local Action to End the Problem – Texas Unites (fee applies)

Over 300 communities, including several in Texas, have banned the sale of puppy mill dogs in pet stores. These humane pet store ordinances are drying up the market for puppy mill dogs and helping to easing the suffering of breeding dogs who are routinely confined in tiny, filthy cages until they can no longer produce another litter of puppies. Passing a local ordinance, even if your community does not currently have a puppy selling pet store, is a vital step in helping bring about an end to this cruel business model.

You will hear from two speakers who have decades of lobbying experience and have been at the forefront of this campaign. You’ll learn how to get an ordinance drafted, introduced and enacted into law. You’ll learn what hurdles that puppy mill lobbyist will throw in your path, and how to overcome them. This workshop is a must for those who are passionate about ending puppy mills.

Webinar – 5/27/21 – Refresh Your Compassionate Heart: An Everyday Tool for You and Your Team – Texas Unites (fee applies)

Even before the pandemic, individuals dedicated to helping animals experienced high levels of daily stress.  COVID-19 has added new challenges to this lifesaving work, leaving dedicated staff and volunteers of animal welfare organizations even more vulnerable to compassion fatigue and burnout.  With less opportunity for in-person support, a strategy that individuals can apply to help them recognize their needs and unique gifts is essential.  Honor Feelings: Reframe Story is a proactive tool that individuals can practice every day and share both in-person and while engaged in virtual conversations and gatherings.   One tool cannot hold all the answers, but for anyone feeling locked into stress, grief, or emotional overload, Honor Feelings: Reframe Story provides a jumpstart to begin to restore the joy in this lifesaving, heart-driven work.

Webinar – 5/27/21 – Underserved or Underleveraged? A Data Driven Look at our Communities – Texas Unites (fee applies)

The social vulnerability index (SVI) study, published by Best Friends Animal Society, brings to light many conclusions, some expected and some not so much.  The study overlays the 2019 Best Friends National Dataset with the Center for Disease Controls SVI data which indicates level of vulnerability for human suffering and financial loss based on 15 variables.

In this session we dive into the output of that study, focusing on key takeaways to help us modify our programs to best serve and utilize our community.

  • Online Event – 6/3/21 – Maddie’s Candid Conversation Series – Gabrielle Chapman & Justin Marceau – Maddie’s Fund

    Online Event – 6/3/21 – Maddie’s Candid Conversation Series – Gabrielle Chapman & Justin Marceau – Maddie’s Fund

Join us for a special edition of Maddie’s Candid Conversation where we will be talking with Justin Marceau, author of Beyond Cages: Animal Law and Criminal Punishment. The discussion will center around the role of fines and fees, civil penalties, conviction and punishment in achieving positive outcomes for animals – and how current enforcement models can in fact produce negative consequences for companion animals which can hinder the goal of lifesaving. Gabrielle Chapman, a social justice analyst, will facilitate the conversation, moderate your questions about how systemic racism plays a role, and share ways we can more effectively support companion animals and their families.

    About the speakers:
Gabrielle Chapman is a Social Justice Analyst at The Woodrow Consulting Firm. She formerly worked as a Senior Social Justice Analyst with The Humane Society of the United States’ Pets for Life program where she lent her expertise about how systemic racism is perpetuated within animal welfare. She helps bring forth an increased consciousness about systemic racism and other forms of oppression which can hinder growth and well-being for communities and their companion animals. Her consulting work is informed by her knowledge across racial justice, food/land justice, and animal rights/welfare, using a One Health model that strives to develop solutions and build relationships from a socio-ecological perspective.

Justin F. Marceau is a Professor of Law and the Animal Legal Defense Fund Professor at the University of Denver. He is also the Brooks Institute Faculty Research Scholar of Animal Law and Policy, and an affiliated faculty member with the Institute for Human Animal Connections at the Graduate School of Social Work. Professor Marceau also serves as the reporter for the pattern criminal jury instruction committee of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit, and he is a Fellow of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics.
