Webinar – 3/11/21 – Your End of the Leash Part One: Handler Body Language – Suzanne Clothier (fee applies)

While much of dog training seems focused on the dog, handlers can and do affect their dog’s behavior and learning. Masters of body language subtleties, dogs are finely attuned to us, aware of how we move, act, speak, breathe. Many training problems are rooted in communication issues, caused by a handler’s body language and unintended messages.

The dog’s understanding of the handler’s behavior is built in the details of how the handler typically moves, laughs, smiles, speaks, breathes, etc. in familiar and comfortable settings. But under stress, in unfamiliar or challenging situations, things can change.

Shifts in the handler signals to the dog that the person he relies on is alarmed, angry, worried, or even afraid. Depending on the dog, this can have significant impact on behavior.

This webinar will help you become more aware of your own body language:

    • Breathing
    • Muscle tension
    • Flexion & stance
    • Blink rate
    • Core & gaze orientation

As a bonus, you’ll learn Suzanne’s 5 Point Check approach to handler awareness & self monitoring. This simple but effective technique will help you, and – for professionals – is ideal for your students.

We’ll be doing some interactive exercises throughout the webinar so you get to experiment and experience how simple changes can provide profound changes – for the better!

Join us – your dog will thank you for your improved awareness of your role as your dog’s partner.

ALL WEBINARS ARE RECORDED. A link will be sent to you 48 hours after the completion of the webinar for you to access the recording and watch at your convenience. If you need CEUs for IAABC or PPAB, instructions on how to get those CEUs will be made available during the webinar. CEUs for IAABC and PPAB are pending.

CASCAR Zoom Call for California Shelters – 3/4/21 – Long Beach Animal Services & Stray Cat Alliance Partnership – CASCAR – UC Davis KSMP

This week we’ll continue the conversation we started on February 18: an oral history of the partnership between Long Beach Animal Services and Stray Cat Alliance to implement one of the early SNR/RTF/community cat programs in California. Kelly Miott (erstwhile with Long Beach Animal Care Services), Staycee Dains (current director of LBACS), and Anna Wong and Christi Metropole (Stray Cat Alliance) have agreed to join us. This is an experiment but hopefully will be fun and interesting and will inspire more sharing of the many great stories in California animal welfare and sheltering.

CASCAR Zoom Call for California Shelters – 2/18/21 – Riverside County Field Services Update – CASCAR – UC Davis KSMP

This coming Thursday, in addition to the usual hellos and whatever is pressing on people’s minds, we will hear a quick update from Chris Mayer, the Commander of Field Operations for the Riverside County Dept. of Animal Services, on how the various changes of the past year have been integrated into the work of their field services team. I heard him speak on a recent Maddie’s Friday leadership call and asked him to give a reprise for us as the field service perspective is such an important one to include. We are eager to hear from you as well – field officers are on the front lines of communication, often on their own in the moment. What has worked well, what challenges have you run across in terms of supporting officers and bringing the whole shelter team along with new programs and policies?
