  • Webinar – 10/21/20 – The Role of Psychopharmacology in Shelter Animal Management – The AAWA

Webinar – 10/21/20 – The Role of Psychopharmacology in Shelter Animal Management – The AAWA

The Role of Psychopharmacology in Shelter Animal Management

We will explore the role psychoactive medications can play in the management of shelter animals’ behavior issues. Adopting out animals that are taking psychoactive medication can be challenging as potential adopters often have preconceptions. Shelter staff, including veterinarians, need to be prepared to navigate such adoption counseling conversations to make the right match.  Learn how to help adopters understand the full situation and their role in a successful outcome. Medication monitoring in the shelter and post-adoption support will also be discussed. This presentation is suited for veterinary, shelter, rescue, and animal behavior professionals.

This session is part of the Shelter Medicine series, a collaboration between the Association of Shelter Veterinarians and The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement.

This live and recorded program has been approved for:

    • 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE approval
    • 1 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credit
    • 1 CE towards ACO CE requirements per Ch. 829 of the Texas Health and Safety Code by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS)

Malena DeMartini-Price is renowned in the dog training world for her expertise in dog separation anxiety issues. She is the author of the book Treating Separation Anxiety in Dogs and has contributed articles on separation anxiety to multiple publications such as the Association of Professional Dog Trainers’ (APDT) Chronicle of the Dog, Pet Professional Guild’s (PPG) Barks From the Guild, and various national magazines such as The Bark. She lectures on SA at professional dog training workshops and conferences around the world, including everything from large professional conferences to small venues. She also has been interviewed widely on this topic and multiple videos and podcasts have been produced. Malena is an honors graduate of the esteemed  Academy for Dog Trainers, where she studied under Jean Donaldson, and is a member of the APDT, the Pet Professionals Guild, and the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants.

Malena has focused exclusively on SA since 2001, working many hundreds of cases and constantly innovating to find better ways to treat the condition and support clients. Her particular strengths lie in reading the subtleties of dog body language and guiding owners patiently and with great enthusiasm through the gentle process of healing their dogs.

Today, her practice is split between overseeing a team of the top SA trainers in the world and continuing to educate trainers, veterinarians, and dog owners to better treat SA, in order to help the most number of dogs and humans possible overcome this agonizing issue. In addition to writing and lecturing, Malena runs a certification program for accomplished dog professionals looking to hone their SA skills and also has produced an online self-paced course for dog owners.

Malena lives in Northern California with her husband Kevin—also a certified dog trainer—their dog Tini DeMartini, and a myriad of local separation anxiety dog-friends who occasionally hang out while completing their training.

The NEFHS has served as a platform to discuss important issues impacting New England and the field of animal welfare for decades.  Despite our track record of tackling difficult issues, this will be our first to facilitate a conversation that addresses the lack of People of Color (POC) within our field. This webinar series will also address the disproportionate, negative impact many organizational, local, and state animal welfare policies and practices have on POC. The NEFHS Board acknowledges the need for continued evaluation and learning for all of us, our Board included. It is important to prioritize this issue throughout the year, every year, until systemic racism no longer exists. The NEFHS is committed to providing resources to help you through this journey, through this webinar series and at our Annual Conference to keep us all moving forward. This series is open to all animal welfare employees and/or volunteers, which includes aimal shelters, animal control and rescues of all sizes.

Join The New England Federation of Humane Societies for a 90-minute panel and Q&A to discuss the lack of diversity in animal welfare. Learn how to recognize your own implicit bias. Find ways to make your organization a more diverse and inclusive environment for staff and volunteers, which will lead to a more welcoming environment for your community.

    Panelists:

    • Shafonda Davis, Executive Director, Animal Protection Society of Durham
    • James Evans, CARE, President
    • Jennifer Evans, CARE, Chief Operations Officer

These Toes Were Made for More Than Scratching:
The Case Against Feline Toe Amputation

Presented by Robin Downing, DVM, MS, DAAPM, DACVSMR, CVPP, CCRP

    Tuesday, October 13, 2020
    8:00pm – 9:30pm (ET)

Our speaker, Dr. Downing, says “We as a profession have failed our cat population of patients miserably by sanitizing this procedure of feline toe amputation by using the term ‘declaw.’” Do you agree? In 2019 New York State banned declawing. Legislation is now being introduced in several other states to ban this procedure, and many of our clients and colleagues are talking about declawing in a more thoughtful way. This webinar will help you prepare for those conversations.

After attending this webinar, participants will:

    • Understand the critical role cats’ paws/toes play in their lives
    • Understand the pathogenesis of chronic maladaptive pain that can result from feline toe amputation
    • Understand the pathologic changes in biomechanics that result from feline toe amputation
    • Understand the bioethical violations involved in feline toe amputation
    • Understand strategies that will enable cat owners to encourage acceptable use of their cats’ claws.

We hope you will join us as we explore this controversial topic.

This webinar is RACE-approved for 1.5 hours of veterinary CE credit and is available at no cost to HSVMA members.

  • Online Event – 10/15/20 – The Love Affair That Changed America: Pet Nation – The Bridge Club

Online Event – 10/15/20 – The Love Affair That Changed America: Pet Nation – The Bridge Club

Veterinary medicine continues to evolve because we’ve become a pet nation. This is a conversation on how we got where we are today.

    About this Event

In the last 20 years pets have gone from living in the backyard to sleeping on our beds, and now show up outside of the home in every corner of America. Pet Nation tells the story of this seismic shift and the economic, media, legal, political, and social dramas springing from this cultural transformation.

Since 1998 the pet population in the U.S. has almost doubled — about two-thirds of the country now owns a pet. No longer left to wander the neighborhood, dogs and cats eat special food, get individualized medical attention, and even fly in the cabin.

As founder of the Animal Policy Group, Mark Cushing gives us an inside look at the rise of Pet Nation, tracking the myriad ways pets are adopted (a “Canine Freedom Train” runs south to north), reporting on pet rights legislation (and the unseen problems that come with elevating their status), revealing the truth about large scale breeders (many of whom have been wrongly targeted), and discovering that despite what many organizations would have us believe, there is a shortage of dogs.

In this rare Bridge Club discussion, we get to understand how Lassie did play a role in changing how pets are treated and more! Come join author, Mark Cushing, as we take the Pet Nation journey.
