    Level and Prerequisites: This basic course will be open to general practice veterinarians actively interested in veterinary dentistry. Participants in the course should have an interest in taking better care of the dental needs of their patients. Although not required, it is strongly recommended that participants take the first module, DENT109-0920: Veterinary Dentistry for the General Practitioner Module 1, prior to enrolling in this course.

    Course Information:
    The second of 2 modules, this course is designed to allow discussions of current techniques used in veterinary dentistry. Veterinarians practicing all levels of veterinary dentistry are invited to participate, from the veterinarian just interested in getting started in veterinary dentistry to the Board-Certified Veterinary Dentist. The course will cover how to read intraoral radiographs, normal radiographic anatomy, radiographic diagnosis of common intraoral disease, indications for exodontia, extraction equipment and extraction techniques, indications, drugs and landmarks for local anesthesia, treatment of feline tooth resorption and stomatitis.

    In this presentation we will talk about our Winn Feline Foundation sponsored studies investigating gastrointestinal disease in fostered shelter kittens. Topics ranging from the search for infectious causes for diarrhea in this population to pursuit and discovery of treatment interventions associated with survival of fostered shelter kittens with diarrhea will be covered.     Dr. Jody Gookin completed her DVM at the University of California at Davis in 1993 followed by advanced clinical training at North Carolina State University as an Intern in Small Animal Medicine and Surgery, a Fellow in Urology and Nephrology, and a Resident in Small Animal Internal Medicine. Dr. Gookin was board certified as a specialist in Small Animal Internal Medicine by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine in 1998. Following clinical training, Dr. Gookin completed a Ph.D. in Gastrointestinal Physiology where she focused on understanding how the gastrointestinal epithelium functions to promote defense and repair of the intestinal tract against injury and infection. Dr. Gookin is currently a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences at North Carolina State University where her efforts are devoted to research in gastroenterology, clinical service in small animal internal medicine and teaching of veterinary students. Dr. Gookin is recognized for her expertise in gastroenterology with a special emphasis on infectious causes of diarrheal disease. In 2011, Dr. Gookin’s research team and key collaborators were recognized by Winn Feline Foundation/American Veterinary Medical Foundation for their research contributions to advancement of feline medicine.

    The Role of Psychopharmacology in Shelter Animal Management

    We will explore the role psychoactive medications can play in the management of shelter animals’ behavior issues. Adopting out animals that are taking psychoactive medication can be challenging as potential adopters often have preconceptions. Shelter staff, including veterinarians, need to be prepared to navigate such adoption counseling conversations to make the right match.  Learn how to help adopters understand the full situation and their role in a successful outcome. Medication monitoring in the shelter and post-adoption support will also be discussed. This presentation is suited for veterinary, shelter, rescue, and animal behavior professionals.

    This session is part of the Shelter Medicine series, a collaboration between the Association of Shelter Veterinarians and The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement.

    Malena DeMartini-Price is renowned in the dog training world for her expertise in dog separation anxiety issues. She is the author of the book Treating Separation Anxiety in Dogs and has contributed articles on separation anxiety to multiple publications such as the Association of Professional Dog Trainers’ (APDT) Chronicle of the Dog, Pet Professional Guild’s (PPG) Barks From the Guild, and various national magazines such as The Bark. She lectures on SA at professional dog training workshops and conferences around the world, including everything from large professional conferences to small venues. She also has been interviewed widely on this topic and multiple videos and podcasts have been produced. Malena is an honors graduate of the esteemed  Academy for Dog Trainers, where she studied under Jean Donaldson, and is a member of the APDT, the Pet Professionals Guild, and the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants.

    Malena has focused exclusively on SA since 2001, working many hundreds of cases and constantly innovating to find better ways to treat the condition and support clients. Her particular strengths lie in reading the subtleties of dog body language and guiding owners patiently and with great enthusiasm through the gentle process of healing their dogs.

    Today, her practice is split between overseeing a team of the top SA trainers in the world and continuing to educate trainers, veterinarians, and dog owners to better treat SA, in order to help the most number of dogs and humans possible overcome this agonizing issue. In addition to writing and lecturing, Malena runs a certification program for accomplished dog professionals looking to hone their SA skills and also has produced an online self-paced course for dog owners.

    Malena lives in Northern California with her husband Kevin—also a certified dog trainer—their dog Tini DeMartini, and a myriad of local separation anxiety dog-friends who occasionally hang out while completing their training.

This webinar series will also address the disproportionate, negative impact many organizational, local, and state animal welfare policies and practices have on POC. The NEFHS Board acknowledges the need for continued evaluation and learning for all of us, our Board included. It is important to prioritize this issue throughout the year, every year, until systemic racism no longer exists.     PRESENTER: Robin Downing, DVM, MS, DAAPM, DACVSMR, CVPP, CCRP

    Dr. Downing is Hospital Director of The Downing Center for Animal Pain Management, LLC. She has received many regional, national, and international awards, including the Excellence in Veterinary Medicine Award in 2001 from the World Small Animal Veterinary Association, and most recently the 2020 Leo K. Bustad Companion Animal Veterinarian of the Year Award from the AVMA.

    Dr. Downing is a Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation, a Certified Veterinary Pain Practitioner, and she was the third veterinarian in the world to earn the Diplomate credential in the American Academy of Pain Management (a human pain management organization). She was a founder of the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management, and served as that organization’s second President. In addition, she has served as President of the American Association of Human-Animal Bond Veterinarians (now called the Human-Animal Bond Association).

    Dr. Downing is an internationally sought-after speaker on a wide variety of topics including pain management, physical rehabilitation, physical medicine, hospice/end-of-life care, anaesthesia related topics, and overcoming compliance obstacles/issues in veterinary medicine. In 2016 she completed her Master of Science degree in Clinical Bioethics from the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in NYC and Union Graduate College with the intention of translating the practices of clinical bioethics for application in veterinary medicine. This commitment includes framing the imperatives of the Fear Free movement, as well as comprehensive acute and chronic pain management, as obligations grounded in bioethical principles. She is now working on a Doctorate in Clinical Bioethics at Loyola University of Chicago.
