Hello National Shelter Medicine Rounds attendees,

We will be holding rounds tomorrow 7/14 and continuing discussion from last week surrounding shelter medicine educators tactics during this time. We welcome others to come prepared to informally share more about their altered teaching models.

Dr. Crawford also shared this timely veterary student survey to take a look at:

US – VETERINARY STUDENT SURVEY  The VBMA, the Veterinary Information Network (VIN), and VIN Foundation developed a survey to shed light on if, and how, the pandemic is impacting veterinary students preparing to enter the veterinary workforce. More than 1,000 veterinary students from the classes of ’20 and ’21 at US and Caribbean veterinary schools responded. The survey results showed that most students felt that their school’s reaction to COVID-19 was reasonable, and nearly 90% of the class of 2020 had signed or verbally agreed to employment. However, mental wellbeing of students has declined, and nearly two-thirds of the class of 2021 had externship experiences postponed or canceled. Click here to see the results of the survey.

Hello National Shelter Medicine Rounds attendees,

For National Rounds next week Tuesday July 28th at 3pm CST we are hoping to discuss animal hoarding with all of you. We’ve heard from a few groups developing new strategies to manage cases – especially in the context of COVID. We’re interested in hearing from others about how cases are being managed and what community collaborations you’ve put in place. We hope to have many participate in discussing effective approaches to hoarding and interventions that improve human and animal wellbeing without causing detriments from exceeding shelter capacity or care through mass intake.  We hope to see many of you join us on Tuesday!

The term “separation anxiety” is familiar to most people who share their lives with dogs. It has been defined as a condition in which a behavior is exhibited when a dog is not able to access a preferred person.

Regardless of the specific behavior — urination, destruction of furniture, or demolition of doorways — the “diagnosis” would be the same. New research suggests that these behaviors are not the same at all, and might therefore need to be treated differently. This webinar will discuss some current perspectives on this disturbing condition and introduce new concepts for management.
