Tackle Controlled Drug and Premises Permit Regulations Head-on to Deliver Better Care

    Why this matters now

Intakes are outpacing outcomes as communities and shelters are struggling to access veterinary care. A recent survey showed 66% of California shelters have no veterinarian on staff and 26% lack RVTs. Community members outside shelter walls face the same challenges to accessing care for pets, and the struggle is greater in underresourced areas and veterinary deserts where affordable care may be nearly impossible to come by.

More than ever, it’s critical to make the most of the resources we do have, but first we have to understand the state and federal regulations that impact the care we can provide.

What exactly does your shelter need to know about controlled drugs and premises permits? It’s all covered in a new on-demand webinar and short course from the Maddie’s® Million Pet Challenge Learniverse.

Cut through the confusion and earn CE while you learn the essentials!

  • National Shelter Medicine Rounds – 10/10/23 – Use of the Modified Live Canine Distemper Virus and Canine Parvovirus Vaccine in Neonatal Puppies in Animal Shelters – UW Shelter Medicine Program

National Shelter Medicine Rounds – 10/10/23 – Use of the Modified Live Canine Distemper Virus and Canine Parvovirus Vaccine in Neonatal Puppies in Animal Shelters – UW Shelter Medicine Program

The University of Wisconsin Shelter Medicine Program is thrilled to announce the next installment of National Shelter Medicine Rounds!

National Rounds is a platform for discussion of current topics relevant to shelter medicine for continued learning and collaboration.  While primarily intended or shelter veterinarians, others interested in shelter medicine are welcome to join; we believe everyone will take something away from these calls!  The next national rounds call will take place Tuesday, October 10th from 2:30 to 3: 30 Central Time.

The topic of presentation and discussion this week will be Use of the Modified Live Canine Distemper Virus and Canine Parvovirus Vaccine in Neonatal Puppies in Animal Shelters”

We know that the single best way to protect neonatal and juvenile animals from infectious disease is to care for them in an environment where exposure to disease is low (which does not describe a shelter environment!)  Despite efforts to find alternative housing options for these vulnerable animals, underage puppies still end up in animal shelters.  Previous recommendations have been to wait until 4 weeks of age to begin vaccination, potentially missing opportunities to provide protection as early as possible.  Please join us for national rounds Tuesday October 10th when Dr. Sandra Newbury (UW) and Dr. Kate Hurley (UC Davis) discuss a new recommendation for vaccination of neonatal and juvenile puppies in environments that present meaningful risk.

We hope to have an open discussion, so come with questions and feel free to unmute to participate!  Our hope is to create a space that feels safe for all participants; we ask you to follow these Accountable Space guidelines. The presentation portion of National Rounds will be recorded, but the discussion and Q & A sessions will not.

If you or someone you know would like to be added to the national rounds email list,  please send your request to nationalsheltermedicinerounds@vetmed.wisc.edu.
