This calendar is a listing of webinars, other learning opportunities, online meetings and other upcoming national events related to animal sheltering and related areas of interest.

Only some of these events are produced by the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program. Most are being created and sponsored by other groups and agencies.  Being listed here does not mean that we have reviewed the material contained.  We are trying to provide a variety of resources to hopefully help make your life a little easier.  For additional information on any of these items before or after the event please contact the organizer directly (listed in the item description).

Know of any event that we are missing that you think should be shown here?

Webinar – 8/9/21 – MAC 2021 Webinar Series – Words Matter – Masachusetts Animal Coalition

August 9, 2021 @ 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM PDT

Free

Words Matter:
The words we choose to say are the ways we represent ourselves.  These words matter. Both our words and our nonverbal actions hold a lot of power, more than we probably even realize. Words are so important because they can begin to shape how an individual actually views themselves and the world. Being intentional about the words we choose involves being a practitioner of careful, thoughtful and deliberate positive communication. This is critical everywhere, yes even for those of us in animal welfare, in veterinary medicine, anywhere as global citizens working with animals and the humans who love them. But don’t worry, there is no perfect here. Everyone makes mistakes and we all will continue to do so. But if we can hone our listening skills and learn to interact with integrity and respect, we can be part of the way words can change the world. Let’s talk about this and get some practice!

Your Takeaway:
In the ever-evolving world of animal welfare we could all take a moment to reflect on what harm – or good – we might be doing by deciding to use certain words.  We may be so used to certain habits that we don’t even realize what we are saying.  Aimee can help us get some perspective on something many of us have probably never considered.

About Our Speaker:
As the new Vice President of Animal Welfare and Veterinary Medicine, Aimee Christian oversees the Animal Rescue League of Boston’s (ARL) animal welfare and veterinary programs, including the Animal Care & Adoption Centers in Boston, Dedham, and Brewster; Community Operations; Community and Shelter Medicine; Law Enforcement; and Boston Veterinary Care (BVC).  Working alongside the President & CEO, she ensures that all animal care operations are running smoothly and remain aligned with the organization’s strategic plan. Prior to joining ARL, Aimee was the Vice President of Community Medicine at the ASPCA. In that role she served communities in New York City, Los Angeles, and Miami and worked for nearly 15 years overseeing the ASPCA’s high quality, high-volume spay/neuter and basic veterinary care programming nationwide. She is a Fellow at the Center for Animals and Public Policy at Tufts University. Aimee received two master’s degrees from Harvard University, in language and in education. Her areas of expertise are in strategy, coaching/mentoring, change management, and process improvement.  She is deeply committed to health equity for underserved animals and humans, and believes that the future of animal welfare is community-based.  Originally from New York City, Aimee lives in Concord, Massachusetts with her family, her cats, and a flock of hens, and is a writer in her spare time.  She is thrilled to be part of ARL both because its mission is so closely aligned with her passion, and because she sees it as an honor to give back to the communities in her adopted hometown of Boston.
