Kick Off the Year With Open Arms and $420,000 in Grant Prizes

Pilot new approaches that open doors to new adopters and volunteers…and get a grant for doing it! Along with 21 national organizations, California for All Animals is inviting you to kick off the new year by joining the 2023 Open Arms Challenge. This Challenge is all about spending the month of April introducing more accessible, equitable, and inclusive policies, marketing, partnerships and customer service. PLUS, there’s $420,000 in grant prizes available, and your shelter could qualify for a grant of up to $10,000.

What could your organization do in just 30 days? What could we all do together in 30 days? The possibilities are endless, and the impacts are measurable—and powerful. These month-long pilots prove you can start small to achieve big wins for pets and people in your community, as 2022 Open Arms Challengers like Animal Rescue League of Berks County can attest.

Animal Rescue League of Berks County translated newsletter

The Challenge gave ARL the perfect opportunity to explore new ways to connect more potential adopters to animals waiting for homes. They teamed up with their local Penn State University branch Spanish classes to bust language barriers and translate shelter communications, including newsletters and adoption-related materials.

The result? More languages led to more love for animals who needed homes and for the families who adopted them. With the spark of a single partnership, ARL created a more welcoming and inclusive culture, enhanced customer service and customer success, and made their adoption process more inviting and equitable.

“The bilingual signage incorporated around our building, the accessible website information, and our bilingual adoption paperwork made it possible for Spanish speakers such as Rafaela to have a smooth adoption experience,” notes Gen, ARL Adoption Counselor. “Upon arriving at our shelter, she was able to easily check-in online, complete an adoption profile, meet the animals she was interested in, and finally, adopt a dog, all in her native language. She was overjoyed to get to take her new companion home without feeling uncomfortable due to language barriers and can look back on her experience with a positive perspective.”

The approach will be different for every organization, but the spirit and goals are the same: increase inclusivity and provide a welcoming environment for all staff (paid and unpaid) and community members; and keep pets in the arms of the people who love them when possible. Challenge activities can be as simple as returning voicemails in a timely manner, providing literature in multiple languages or completely rewriting or doing away with the adoption application, to undertaking bias training or choosing new neighborhoods for adoption events. Read about other Challengers’ translation transformations.

Get ready, California! Register January 23–30 to join organizations across the country in this 30-day challenge.

  • Webinar – 3/9/23 – Law Enforcement and Animal Control Joint Responses – NACA/Justice Clearinghouse

Webinar – 3/9/23 – Law Enforcement and Animal Control Joint Responses – NACA/Justice Clearinghouse

There is a lot of overlap between the roles of police officers and Sheriff’s deputies, who are expected to be masters in all things related to public safety and law enforcement, and animal control and humane officers, who are expected to be masters in all things animal-related. That overlap is increasing as pets become our children. We share two common goals: safety for all—people and animals alike; and successful prosecution of those who endanger that safety. We need to reduce our insular thinking and include each other in our respective viewpoints, priorities and methods. This webinar will help bridge the gap and start a conversation between these two branches of law enforcement so we can better support each other, ensure more successful operations on both sides, help prosecutors do their job, and reduce everyone’s workload.

    This session will cover:

    • Roles of police/deputies in animal-related incidents
    • Roles of animal control/humane officers in law enforcement
    • Sources of authority of police/deputies and of animal control/humane officers, and how they differ
    • Recognizing the gaps in training/expertise in both fields
    • Common goals and ways to achieve them
    • Benefits of working together

This webinar has been certified by the National Animal Care & Control Association and is approved for 1 Continuing Education Unit.

    Presenter:
Harold Holmes has been the Executive Assistant for The County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control since 2016. Prior, he was a Deputy Director for the County of San Diego Department of Animal Services and before that retired as a Chief of Police in northern California.

Harold is a former U.S. Marine who was recalled to active duty for the Gulf War.

A hostage negotiator and police canine handler of an award-winning patrol dog at Redlands P.D., when he retired from police work, he began a new career as an animal control officer. While at San Diego County Animal Services, he developed the Responsible Pet Ownership Program for animal-law violators, which won an award from the California State Association of Counties. He has experience drafting and shepherding legislation that became law at both the State and local level.

Managing San Diego County’s Dangerous Dog Task Force for three years inspired him to attend law school. Harold graduated as the Valedictorian from Western Sierra Law School and was admitted to the Bar in June 2013. He is also a hearing officer, a trained mediator and teaches a variety of legal and law-enforcement related topics.

He has completed management and executive level trainings, including the County of Los Angeles/USC Executive Leadership Development Program.

  • Webinar – 2/15/23 – Multi-Cat Households: Updates to Recognizing and Managing Intercat Conflict – HSVMA

Webinar – 2/15/23 – Multi-Cat Households: Updates to Recognizing and Managing Intercat Conflict – HSVMA

Although intercat conflict is common in companion cats, it is often unrecognized because of the subtle signs that occur more frequently than hissing or fighting. Without addressing the intercat conflict, feline welfare is impaired. Learn the most recent information to detect intercat conflict, the interplay between mental and physical health and how to manage the distress in these patients. Although psychopharmacology is often recommended, it is most important to address the physical and social environment and identify whether medical management is needed.

During this presentation, attendees will learn:

    • to identify the subtle signs of intercat tensions and conflict
    • to recognize impaired welfare within companion cats
    • steps for early introduction and management of intercat tensions

Webinar – 2/23/23 – Accelerate your learning: Don’t fight extinction – Dog iBox (fee applies)

Animal trainers often talk about first teaching a behavior and then later adding a cue for that behavior. However, while your animal is learning a behavior, your animal is also learning environmental cues, even if you are not aware of them. Behaviors and cues evolve together. When you return to working in this setting or with these props, your animal will be ready to do this behavior again. So, if you try to teach a new behavior under these same conditions, the learning will be slow. This is because the cues for the original behavior will interfere with the acquisition of the new behavior. Instead, you can speed up learning by changing the environmental cues. This presentation will explain how these cues evolve. Then, we’ll look at several case studies and explore how you can use this knowledge to speed up learning.

  • Webinar – 2/3/23 – Deaf Dogs Unleashed with Tiffany Baker – PPG (fee applies)

Webinar – 2/3/23 – Deaf Dogs Unleashed with Tiffany Baker – PPG (fee applies)

Introducing The Control Unleashed (CU) Program, Deaf Dog Style: Deaf Dogs Unleashed! The CU program, developed by Leslie McDevitt, was designed to help dogs learn how to relax and focus in challenging environments, while simultaneously building confidence by giving the learner control through predictable patterns in an otherwise unpredictable environment.

After implementing the CU exercises creatively and effectively with a few different deaf dog clients, it became clear that there was a need for these ideas to be shared. And so Control Unleashed for deaf dogs was born. Training with deaf dogs can sometimes be a challenge; the need for attention and engagement from our dogs is crucial when our dogs rely so heavily on visual cues. There’s also the added difficulty our deaf dogs experience with Sudden Environmental Contrast (SEC), as well as a more pronounced startle response when things appear unexpectedly. When things happen in their environment, unpredictably, and outside of their control, it can create increased anxiety and make it difficult for our pups to relax. What better way to provide our deaf dogs with the support they need to navigate their world than The Control Unleashed program?

Throughout this presentation you will get to experience The Control Unleashed program thoughtfully and creatively customized and purposefully geared towards our beloved deaf dogs. This will include introducing unique visual and tactile cues, combined with predictable patterns to build a beautiful recipe for engagement and confidence. We will be navigating the skills to implement the popular “Look At That” conversational game for ‘reactive’ dogs, as well as many of the foundational patterns that build voluntary engagement and predictability such as Up-Down, Ping-pong, Give Me A Break, Whiplash U-turn, and 1-2-3. We will also take a look at what real life application of this program looks like for our deaf dogs, and much more.

Whether you are a deaf dog guardian, or a trainer looking to add tools to your toolbox to better assist your clientele, this one’s for you. The purpose of this presentation is to expand the reach of The Control Unleashed program to provide attendees the resources, education, and skills to bring these beneficial life changing patterns and exercises to the deaf dogs of the world. Get ready to open up a new conversation of empowerment with your deaf dog!

    Learning Objectives:

    • An understanding of the basic mechanics of training with a deaf dog including visual markers, forms of praise, and end of session signals such as a hand flash, thumbs up, the “all done” ASL hand wave.
    • The skills to teach and understanding of these foundational pattern games modified for deaf dogs: Up-down, Ping PongWhiplash U-turn, Give Me A Break, and 1-2-3.
