Online Course – 3/26/21 or 5/19/21 – Bat Basics for CA Animal Care & Control – Bat World MidCities (fee applies)

This program introduces animal care and animal services professionals to the most unique and misunderstood animals on the planet – bats.  As humans expand their footprint on the landscape, bats come into contact with the public with increasing frequency. Animal Services agencies, shelters, veterinary clinics, and nuisance wildlife control operators need to be properly educated and equipped to handle these animals safely, and to provide accurate information to the public about them.

Topics include basic information about bats and their role in the environment, public health and safety issues, rabies, safe capture and handling, eviction and exclusion of bats in human-occupied structures, and White Nose Syndrome.

    The class fee is $49.

This training is approved for HO/CACO CEs.

Online Course – 3/18/21 – Advanced Return to Owner in the Field: Beyond the Scanner – Best Friends

Animal control officers play an integral role today in the reduction of shelter intake by choosing to identify and return stray dogs to their families without bringing them into the shelter, but all too often, officers stop looking for an owner was they find that the animal has no ID, tags, or microchip. This workshop highlights successful efforts from agencies across the country that have shown to significantly increase the field RTO rate for those animals without obvious identification.

  • Online Course – 3/18/21 – Community Engagement: The lifesaving philosophy – Best Friends

Online Course – 3/18/21 – Community Engagement: The lifesaving philosophy – Best Friends

The term “community engagement” gets thrown around a lot, as if it is something that an officer can do if they have a few extra minutes.  To unlock the full potential of community engagement, however, we must start thinking of it as less of a project and more of a state of mind. This lifesaving philosophy will not only help save the lives of animals but could potentially save an officer’s life as well.  In this course you will learn how embracing community engagement as a mindset can, and will, increase lifesaving efforts and officer safety.

  • CASCAR Zoom Call for California Shelters – 3/18/21 – Vaccine equity, one health, and how shelters can play a role – CASCAR – UC Davis KSMP

CASCAR Zoom Call for California Shelters – 3/18/21 – Vaccine equity, one health, and how shelters can play a role – CASCAR – UC Davis KSMP

On this week’s CASCAR call, Jace Huggins from the Front Street Shelter in Sacramento will be describing how they’ve partnered with their local public health department to get vaccine information out to the community (in five different languages!) where it is most needed, in conjunction with the team’s regular activities in the field. I LOVE this on so many levels – showcasing the shelter’s commitment to “both ends of the leash,” building trust with local communities, allowing field officers (most of whom are already vaccinated) to be able to share their direct experience. As we’ve found with so many other things in animal welfare, no amount of preaching and teaching will replace one on one human connection. And this collaboration has already led to some exciting future collaborative plans…so hope you can join us to hear all about it and ask questions.

And a heads up: after next Thursday’s call we will be shifting to the 1st and 3rd Tuesdays at 1:00 p.m. starting on April 6th. We’re sorry for the switcheroo for those who have an easier time with morning calls – and hope some who haven’t been able to make the morning calls might be able to join us some afternoons.

  • Webinar – 5/12/21 – Staff Safety and Occupational Hazards in Shelters – The AAWA

Webinar – 5/12/21 – Staff Safety and Occupational Hazards in Shelters – The AAWA

Presented by Jeanette O’Quin, DVM, MPH, DACVPM, DABVP (Shelter Medicine)

There are hazards in every work environment and shelters have additional, unique risks because they handle and treat animals. It is important for shelters to identify and mitigate potential hazards in their work environment, pandemic or no pandemic. This session will discuss chemical, biological, and physical hazards that are commonly found in shelters and introduce measures to reduce those risks. Webinar attendees will be better able to develop and implement strategies to maximize staff health and safety.

This webinar will especially benefit shelter medical staff, shelter executives, and other operational leaders.

This session is part of the Shelter Medicine series, a collaboration between the Association of Shelter Veterinarians and The Association for Animal Welfare Advancement.

This live and recorded program is approved for 1 Certified Animal Welfare Administrator continuing education credit and pending approval for 1 hour of continuing education credit in jurisdictions which recognize RACE.
