Online Conference – 5/7/21 to 5/9/21 – The Lemonade Conference – IAABC and FDSA (fee applies)

As dog trainers, it’s not about what we can’t do — it’s about what we can do! So when COVID-19 shut down IAABC and FDSA’s in-person training conferences in 2020, we took those lemons, squeezed them, added some water, sugar, and a splash of attitude and we made … lemonade!

Working together, IAABC and FDSA created The Lemonade Conference, a highly affordable online educational extravaganza of unprecedented size and scope — 40+ presenters with two simultaneous classrooms running for three days, 18 hours a day.

Now we’re back for the second year and we’ve stepped it up again! This year we have 50+ presenters and *THREE* rooms running simultaneously throughout the conference from 7 a.m. PT ’til 7 p.m. PT!  If you’re not available to attend live, no problem! All conference attendees will have access to a free “library” of presentations from the conference included in their registration fee (conference must be purchased before registration ends; videos are then available for at least a year in your library). Watch the recordings from the comfort of your living room in the months following the conference — always at your leisure.

But what’s a conference without a chance to shop the vendors? A number of fantastic sponsors have stepped up to the plate to join us! You’ll have an opportunity to shop and watch a variety of dog-centric presentations about products and services that are highly applicable for hobbyists and pet professionals alike — make sure you take some time to see what they’re offering this year!

We welcome you to join us and our talented group of presenters, to make new friends around the world, and to shop with our dog-centric vendors. We have so much in common, and so much to learn from each other. We believe we’ll make some very tasty lemonade indeed!

A simple portal between 2 cages allows shelter staff to separate food, water and bed from the litter box and gives cats more space just to be cats. Shelter after shelter report that upper respiratory infections decrease and cats are more comfortable. Who knew one little simple hole could change everything for shelter cats?

Multiple studies have looked at the effect of poor housing on cats, and have linked it to a high incidence of stress-related illness, particularly upper respiratory infections (URI). Shelters frequently assume this condition is simply being spread from cat to cat like the flu, but what’s really happening is the cats are so stressed out they become ill. Giving cats the space they need to exhibit natural behaviors is the key to reducing illness.

  • Webinar – 1/28/21 – Genetics of Dog Aggression – Dr. Jessica Hekman, DVM, PhD – PPG (fee applies)

Webinar – 1/28/21 – Genetics of Dog Aggression – Dr. Jessica Hekman, DVM, PhD – PPG (fee applies)

What do (and don’t) we know about how genetics affects canine aggression?

In this webinar, Jessica Hekman will take a deep dive into her own area of research – how genetics affects personality in dogs. How much of canine personality is due to genetics and how much to environment? How do researchers track down genes related to personality? Have any such genes yet been found? Can we expect a genetic test for dog reactivity any time soon? In this webinar, Jessica will particularly address examples from human literature about traits that are similar to reactivity and aggression in dogs, why they are so hard to understand from a genetics viewpoint, and what the future holds for us.

As always, there will be something for everyone, so come listen and ask questions, whether you are just starting to wrap your head around genetics or whether you’re a confirmed science geek!

    About The Presenter

    Dr. Jessica Hekman, DVM, PhD

Jessica is a veterinary researcher who is fascinated by dog behavior. After eleven years working as a computer programmer, she decided to go back to school to research the causes of behavior problems in dogs. She received her veterinary degree in 2012 from the Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine in Massachusetts, where she also received a Master’s degree for her work on stress behaviors in hospitalized dogs. After graduation, she completed a year-long internship specializing in shelter medicine at the University of Florida Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program. She received her PhD in genetics at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, studying a group of foxes (often known as the “Siberian silver foxes”) which have been bred over many generations to be friendly to humans. She is currently working at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard as a postdoctoral associate, studying the genetics of behavior in pet dogs through the Darwin’s Ark project and the Working Dogs Project. Her ultimate goal is to find genetic causes of fearfulness in dogs, to work with behaviorally challenged shelter dogs, and to help people better understand the science behind dog behavior. She also frequently teaches online classes and webinars about canine genetics and behavior. Jessica lives in Raymond, NH with her husband and three dogs. You can follow her on Twitter @dogzombieblog or on Facebook at facebook.com/dogzombieblog.
