As dog trainers, it’s not about what we can’t do — it’s about what we can do! So when COVID-19 shut down IAABC and FDSA’s in-person training conferences, we took those lemons, squeezed them, added some water, sugar, and a splash of attitude and we made … lemonade!
Working together, IAABC and FDSA created The Lemonade Conference, a highly affordable online educational extravaganza of unprecedented size and scope — 40+ presenters with two simultaneous classrooms running for three days, 18 hours a day. And for those not available for the live event, we will include a free “library” of all of the presentations, included in your registration fee (conference must be purchased before it ends; videos are then available for at least a year in your library). Watch the recordings from the comfort of your living room in the months following the conference — always at your leisure.

BACKGROUND:
In March of 2020, the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC) and the Fenzi Dog Sports Academy (FDSA) faced a daunting challenge: How does one host an educational conference when COVID-19 is virtually guaranteed to risk the health and safety of participants?
The answer is – you don’t. You cancel because that is the right thing to do.
So you make the decision to cancel, and then you feel terrible. You’ve let people down, you’ve risked a ton of money, and all that work has been lost. But then you remember – you’re a trainer! It’s not about what we can’t do – it’s about what we can do! So you get up, brush yourself off, look around, and find a solution that fits the problem. You take those lemons, squeeze them, add some water, sugar, and a splash of attitude and you make … lemonade!
And that is exactly what happened. Recognizing that our community needed something to look forward to, especially at a time when many of us are struggling for work, we looked for something we could do.
After a night of non-stop brainstorming between IAABC and FDSA, we knew the answer was there within our reach. We could create an online conference with top-notch presenters, interactive opportunities, and a worldwide schedule to reach the largest number of people. We could offer generous scholarships to support our community in a time of need. We could combine the very best that our communities had to offer in the fields of dog behavior, training and dog sports – the best of the best!
And we did exactly that! Behavioral assessments performed in the shelter are used to evaluate an animals’ behavior in various circumstances for specific purposes. These purposes may be to evaluate the predictability of an animal’s reaction to a number of situations. Recent insight has indicated that the evaluations in the shelter do not reliably predict how the pet is going to behave in the home. Many of the assessments lead to false positive results, meaning a pet can be labeled as being aggressive when it is not. We will review some of the assessments currently used and discuss a different approach to performing behavioral assessments of shelter pets.

Dr. Wailani Sung obtained her master’s degree and Doctorate in Psychology in animal behavior as well as her Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from The University of Georgia. She is a co-author of the book, “From Fearful to Fear Free” along with Dr. Marty Becker, Dr. Lisa Radosta, and Mikkel Becker. Dr. Sung is a contributor to the Fear Free Shelter program. Dr. Sung currently practices veterinary behavioral medicine at the Behavior Specialty Clinic located at the San Francisco SPCA.

Aimee’s focus is on increasing access to spay/neuter and veterinary care across the nation. Previously she was the Director of Programs at ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance where she oversaw spay/neuter training programs of 1,000 professionals a year. She is the founder of Humane Ohio, a spay/neuter clinic performing roughly 18,000 spay/neuters a year and Partner in two full-service access to care veterinary clinics in OH and NC.
Dr. Berliner earned her DVM from Cornell and is boarded in shelter medicine practice and canine and feline practice with the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners. As the Director of Maddie’s Shelter Medicine Program at Cornell, she directs the internship in shelter medicine, trains students in classrooms and shelters, consults with shelters regarding best practices, and oversees the medical program at the SPCA of Tompkins County. She was a seasonal field veterinarian for HSVMA-RAVS for a decade, and currently is a surgical team lead for Spayathon for Puerto Rico. Her interests include infectious diseases, veterinary ethics and decision-making, and innovative outreach programs promoting accessible veterinary care.
Dr. Bolser obtained her veterinary degree from Colorado State University. Following an internship at The Animal Medical Center in New York City, she enjoyed 10 years with The Humane Society of Boulder Valley as Chief Clinic Veterinarian. Driven by a passion for international perspectives, she lived in Beijing, China for 2.5 years and has performed thousands of surgeries in over 20 unique locations globally. She is a medical director for HSUS Spayathon for Puerto Rico and serves on the Board of Directors for the Association of Shelter Veterinarians and Animal Balance. Jennifer is enthusiastic about providing veterinary training and services to communities in need around the world to achieve sustainable impact and solutions for animal care and welfare.
Clinic HQ is the worldwide leader in high volume spay/neuter clinic management software. HQ was created in 2012 with Humane Alliance and now serves hundreds of clinics across the globe. Gina is passionate about spay/neuter in general, and high volume spay/neuter on Native American reservations in particular. She earned a Master of Science degree in Urban Planning from the University of Iowa. Her initial focus was Geographic Information Systems (GIS) which led to software design and, eventually, the creation of Clinic HQ. She lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband, eight-year-old daughter and an opinionated Maltese mix.
Natalie Corwin co-founded Pet Community Center in 2011 and serves as President and CEO. Pet Community Center offers low-cost and free spay/neuter and preventive veterinary care to more than 20,000 patients per year in Nashville, TN. Additional programming includes community cats, mobile veterinary care, and a Pets for Life outreach program. Fun fact: Natalie has appeared as an extra on the TV show The Walking Dead.
Dr. Karsten graduated from the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine in 2010 and went on to complete a shelter medicine internship at Colorado State University. She finished her Shelter Medicine Residency at UC Davis in 2014 and is now the Outreach Veterinarian with the UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program where her role is to advise shelters, perform focused and comprehensive shelter consultations and present at conferences and universities. Dr. Karsten’s interests include population management, infectious disease control and providing accessible, affordable veterinary care to all animals in a community. She also has an immense concern for not only the animals in shelters but also the people who work so diligently every day to care for them.

Given the current pandemic, in an effort to reduce resource use, workload, and the potential for human exposure, shelters and spay-neuter clinics have had to make decisions about which spay-neuter surgeries and other procedures are non-emergency procedures and discontinue those that could be deferred. As operations resume we’ll need to re-assess these areas routinely to make the best use of current resources while emphasizing human and animal health and safety.
